Star Citizen Thread

I'll admit it, I've bought in to the whole Star Citizen thing. I currently have the Freelancer and the Avenger, and a monthly subscription :).

This game will influence my graphics card upgrade in the future. Another reason why I'm not all that bothered with 4K monitors (at least until they come down in price with g-sync installed) is Star Citizen with Oculus Rift

At the end of the latest Wingman's Hanger it was mentioned that there will be an update to the Hanger Module and then in a while they will be implementing "Physical Based Rendering", basically the lighting and detail you see in the Vanduul Scythe video above. Implemented in to Hanger or Dogfighting modules, I don't know.

Chris Roberts did say that by the time Star Citizen is released, a GTX780 will be a mid-range card!

yea SC is pretty much the only reason why i will upgrade my GPU in 2015, i hope a single GPU card will be strong enough to handle the game in oculus rift.
btw is the oculus rift 60hz or 120hz? i suppose it's 120hz because 60hz is eyecancer.

Latest "Letter from the Chairman"

$39million? jesus. I'll sum up the latest letter.

Okay, big news this time, quite literally. I present to you a new captial ship! The Javelin Class Destroyer:

Place your bets on how much it'll cost now.

The other reward for reaching the goal was a new star system which sounds like an excellent place to stress test your rig's performance and be some serious eye candy!
– Breaking news: UEE astrophysicists based at the famed Klavs observatory station have utilized advanced telescopy and other remote sensing technologies to identify a truly unusual star system on the fringes of known space. The object, once thought to be a single massive star, is actually a trinary star consisting of two white dwarfs and an active pulsar orbiting one another. Because of the complex gravitic factors at work, it is now believed that a jump point leading to the system likely exists in or near explored human space. Beyond the bizarre stellar makeup, the composition of the system is all but unknown. Could planets exist in this carefully balanced web? What else might have been drawn there? One thing is certain: the first Citizen to travel to UDS-2943-01-22 will have one hell of a view!
If we reach $40million something big will happen:
Procedural Generation R&D Team – This stretch goal will allocate funding for Cloud Imperium to develop procedural generation technology for future iterations of Star Citizen. Advanced procedural generation will be necessary for creating entire planets worth of exploration and development content. A special strike team of procedural generation-oriented developers will be assembled to make this technology a reality.
Full article here.

What do you lot think then?

If you look at the official star citizen forums some people would basically pay to be crew. They put a whole new meaning to the word "keen".

so you're saying if i buy that thing for $2k people would pay money so they can be part of my crew? interesting..

I was watching a thread on the forums of a guy looking for crew and people said yes within the minute. Most would want an ingame salary though and I really don't know how you'll vet the crews :P

too bad it's too late to switch the engine i suppose. don't like cryengine.
I imagine by the time its fully released they'll have almost completely reworked it, they have the talent to do so for sure. I think valve reworked the quake engine or something (can't remember which engine) and thats how the source engine was made. I'm sure that it'll go down that route.

yep, source is a derivation of idtech, that's why stuff like bunnyhopping works.

which brings me to the point, both valve and infinity ward have been trying for 10+ years to get rid of some things in idtech and they couldn't, i am not sure if cryengine can be reworked to a proper game engine.

Neither am I but positive thinking! From what they've said from the start is that it'll be a properly optimized game, which would be a cryengine first...
