SSDs the low down

When I was doing my RAM OC'ing I noticed that the second you see that little light (where the logo spreads from), at that point it starts loading the RAM up. Tbf boot time is irrelevant anyway, but would be nice

And yeah, the responsiveness is amazing

You can turn that off. You get a black screen instead but it shaves off a small amount of boot time.

Windows key + r to bring up the run box, type Msconfig. Click the boot tab. Lastly, check the No GUI boot option.

Oo smart ! do you get to see what it's up to ?

Great guide. Really useful.

Some things I've found about SSDs that might be of use (apologies if already covered):

SSD Tweaker is a good little optimizer app that combines most of the command line stuff already mentioned into a simple GUI. http://elpamsoft.com/

Force TRIM can be used if performance has dropped off. http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/f...r-entire-drive&p=523305&viewfull=1#post523305

Performance and life of SSDs can be maintained by minimizing writes. It helps to store as much data as possible on a separate disk from the SSD. Main ones that have frequent writes are browser(s) cache, temp directories, installers and downloads. Win 7 libraries (Docs, Pictures, Video, Music etc) default to folders in the user profile on C. These should be reconfigured to default storage on another disk. For more advanced optimization some Windows directories and app temp directories (email storage) can be set up as NTFS junctions. When the default storage directory has to stay on C (e.g. C:/Windows/Installer - where downloaded .msi's go) or the app will break, a junction effectively puts the data elsewhere but maintains the integrity of the original data filepath(s). For example I have 5.4 GB of msi's in C:/Windows/Installer but the data is actually stored on my F: disk via a junction.

on the discussion of page file I normally turn mine off completely. Wonder if thats why my CPU score dropped in vantage after switching to the 570hd from the 560Ti?will have to run a test on that looks like my CPU will be out for delivery today

Ooh thanks, was going to try that, thought it might boot up in text line only or something

570? as in the GTX 570?

yes lol referring to pg file usage I'm wondering if that was why my cpu score dropped as I went ssd about the same time the guide I followed from OCZ forums said it could be disabled so when I get my rig back up I'm going to do a comparision and see if it affects cpu scores

and damn you ALienALX I was wait a min this thread wasnt started my Z0mB13 am I hallucinating lol I was also who the hell is Z0mB13

lmao never ever disable VM dude, ever.

Years people have been spouting that waffle about if you have enough ram to disable it and just run it all through memory. It tends not to work very well

vm the same as page file????

I think the first time I set up the ssd I set it to the if your afraid to disable it option like 2000 then when I swapped mobos and redid it I went ahead and turned it off this is why I am wondering about it affecting the cpu score in vantage like with the 560Ti I hit 60k then with the 570 it was like 27k but several things were changed around that time so I didnt put the page file disabling into the mix of things to look at.

I just kept it to 500MB, just in case I guess. I don't think its ever been used though so who knows.

Also, tried the no GUI boot option, some dodgy bug though, it decided to boot up with 256MB of RAM, which meant that things....went.........very................slowly...................

thats strange I use it all the time when I do a re-install and it works great for me the no gui boot option

VM yeah, virtual memory. God knows why they called it a page file lol. Confusing buggers.

I did try it years ago with Win 98 when I had 2gb ram (when 256mb was the norm) and it just screwed it

Superb guide mate

Going to wait until 2011 or top end Bulldozer gets released next year before I buy my 1st ssd boot drive, fingers crossed they'll be closer to £1 per gb then
