a friend in work wants me to build em a gaming system. i think to get a 7850 but as to the rest im not sure. he doesnt want a flashy case. he likes the shinobi so thats soprted, but should he go for intel or amd,

I would recommend an i3 2120, CX600 power supply, Corsair Carbide 300r, HD 7850 and a Western Digital Caviar Blue 500gb and then if you can afford it a Crucial M4 64gb ssd

Oh sorry I missed out the mobo, A nice h61 board should be fine :)

I have a G840 and whilst it is at 100% usage my 5870 is only at 50% so I would say no

would he not be better with a quad core? he plays il2 sturmovik. i dont know what the needs are. but iss the i3 still a decent enough gaming chip?

how about

any reason not to go matx?

just to add. he deffo wont be overclocking

well. for £5 difference, its a no brainer.
any other issues in the build? case choice saves quite a bit of money. review seems ok, good enough airflow etc

My offering.

On a sidenote: LOOK AT THE PRICE OF THAT RAM. I'M SHOUTING, BECAUSE I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW GOD DAMN CHEAP THAT RAM IS. HOLY CRAP.

Very similar to Josh's in many ways but I've gone for min/maxing to get the better GPU. In order to do that it means:

1. This an i3 so I consider a CPU cooler a bonus since 2 cores will run colder and therefore the cooler will spin quieter.

2. I've also gone for the no-SSD option but picked up a very decent HDD. It's not as fast obviously but I would prefer a better GPU over the drive speed for this budget. The system has enough RAM to not be affected much by the difference once the game has loaded. Again, SSD is an upgrade in my opinion.

A very good build :)
I actually don't know how a 7850 stacks up against the 560Ti 448? I have a feeling that Rawz' marketing techniques are working well on me.

i prefer the m+p build here, for 2 reasons. one. it comes in at 500 with a case. and 2. it hase a gpu that is in stock, not at some low low price that i can never actualy order. been looking at the antec one case. seems to offer a lot for the money. the cpu and gpu is pretty much decided now. just need to get some money from him to start the build, thanks for the suggestions.

I think the 7850 is better. It's on par with a 570 at stock. The difference comes in two places really.

1. The GPU is slightly quicker on the 7850 than the 560 and about the same as the 570 until you overclock it....

2. The 7850 has 2gb of vram which will make a noticeable difference at higher graphics settings and resolutions. 1080p hits the middle-ground for that really where the cards aren't far apart on medium settings but if you go higher then the larger vram is going to win and games are only going to get more detailed.

Josh's build is still good - it's just the SSD/cooler vs GPU choice that's different and that's a personal choice really. A pc with a faster overall feel (SSD) or ~10% better gaming performance (7850).

Rawz only announced the card this morning and that the 560 would be in tomorrow so you would actually be able to get it...

I think that price/performance wise, the 560 448 is better, but overall the 7850 is the better option.
With that in mind - go for M&P's build! I'd still include some aftermarket heatsink though, because stock coolers are loud as hell.

Oh, and if you do go with M&P's build, be sure to save up for an SSD later! It really does make a difference.

ok, done a build on aria.

took a step back on some of the reccomended components. saved a fair bit on the gpu. but like i said., he will not be overclocking, ever. so not much point goin for a power edition card. not worth the extra £40 for him

that is a very nice deal on the 560. but it is likely to be a few weeks till i can order anything anyway

sidenote, he is upgrading from a 12 year old pc with no gpu...

edit: how about a momentus xt instead of the cost of an ssd?
