Sound/Graphic Stutter?

I had a 6800ULTRA OC when they first came out and it started giving me graphics spikes on further overclocking so I reduced it, a short time later they started up again without any warning. After investigation it turned out the fan had become clogged up with dust (despite the whole case being filtered and changed regularly), a simple clean of the fan and heatsink was all that was required.

Had no problems with my 7900GTX OC yet though. Emphasis on the 'yet'.

Wow...i have the exact same problem running very similar system specs. Pentium D 3.4ghz, 8800 gts, 1 gig pc3200 ddr. I get the same thing to happen in games, ill get to a new part and the sound and video will start stuttering its horrible. I've tried different drivers, even tried xp and vista. Not one thing has helped. My only real guess is the memory, pc3200 single channel ram isnt exactly the fastest and 1 gig isn't exactly a massive amount these days. Also 8800 drivers are FAR FROM optimized for...anything and i think its eating up a ton of system ram which is causing windows to create lots and lots of virtural ram which really messes up games. Now, i could be waaaaay off, but thats just what i think is going on. If you do figure this out please let me know, if ANYTHING WORKS!!!! please let me know.

Sound pretty logical! :)

I get the st..st..stutters in Dark Messiah, War Hammer Mark of Chaos, and during the intro to Oblivion. I believe it could be due to the number of processes that are running in the background. Used to get it a lot in Half-Life in Win98 on my Penty rig. Never did find a cure for it.

I remember someone saying you could cure it by upping the priority in Task Manager, but I've never been successful with that yet. I'll just keep tweaking til I find it.

I don't think its processes with me.. :)

I have tweaked XP to death. I have 16 processes all windows.

I can play Oblivion fine.. But other games like BF2142 or Tony Hawks just stutter in places.. :(

Dont you have the SB Live! 5.1? If you do take out the card, uninstall the drivers, put the card back in and let Widnows just detect it with no drivers. (It should detect SB Live! ect except you dont have to install anything yourself Windows does it) and it should work. Back when i believed in a sound card other than X-FI for gaming i used this exact card. Seems Creative got to

y with their drivers and Beefy2, Oblivion, 2142, and some others where having this messed up glitchy sound yet performance was perfect smooth. My current setup and a SB Live! 5.1 and Creatives latest drivers i bet you it would do it.

If that dosent work leave the new drivers uninstalled, when Windows installs the sound card put your original CD in and go to device manager. When there update the drivers and make it find the drivers only on the cd. That should work. If not, find older drivers from their website and use those. Either way, an older driver and no extra crap installed should do the trick. I use onboard for this reason, i got tired of not having an X-FI and having to deal with Creatives crap.

Yup, i also have a sound blaster live 5.1 lol. Odd how we came up with almost the same system, but that sound card is just acting as a place holder really. I'm gonna pull it out and see if it helps.

Trust me, i wouldnt be using onboard if i didnt have to. I like the Karajan audio module and all but how loose it is worries me during LANs.

Yeah, just uninstalled the drivers and put the card back in. Windows detected and im letting it install whatever it wants now. Hope it works, and thanks for the help.

Edit : Hmm...windows couldn't find drivers, i think ill just get rid of this card lol

XP SP2 does have native driver support for SB Live 5.1. Not sure why its not finding them?

Do you only get the stutter in games or other audio? Have you tried the Directsound and Directmusic tests in dxdiag? A Directdraw override might be worth a shot.

Hell i dont even use SP2 and i have support for the Live cards. Ive never had to install the Creative crap if i didnt want to. But here again like i said as well, if it dosent work then just pop in the cd and tell stupid Windows where the drivers are. Sometimes it wants to be stubborn. This is why i ditched the card TBH. Got tired of all the hassle. Man im cranky, need sleep.

I think the chip is pretty good! :)

I has 100 times better sound then my onboard so I used it.

Windows has never found the drivers on its own. It can find the gameport drivers and never the actual sound.

And using windows to get the drivers off the CD is basically the same as using the installer..

Not exactly becasue the installed installs the CTHELPER.EXE, Audio crap and the default settings and everything else. You tell Windows to look on the CD and its just installing a .DLL for that particular piece of Hardware, not installing any other software.

Disabling audio altogether got rid of the stuttering for me, but the framerates still aren't what they could be. Tommorow ill be installing a new motherboard and 2 gigs of dd2 so we'll see how that helps.

Yeah all the Live cards I`ve installed also had WDM drivers from windows installed on them automatically, then I went over them.
