Sound Card

Okay so i need to decide between the Xonar STX and the Pheobus.

Before everyone starts screaming at me that the STX is better I wanted to ask one question.

A big thing for me with the Pheobus is the Active Noise cancellation. Could I replace this with for example; a desk mic and a bit of software?

As I'm on this topic What headphones would you recommend for £150? I was recommended PC360s before. If havign a mic wasn't one of my requirments would there be anything better for me. (Also considering waiting for the PC363.)

Thanks!

Beyerdynamic DT770s and the STX.

Forget the Phoebus. It's basically an STX, but more expensive and intended for use with gaming headsets, not proper headphones.
The STX reproduces sound perfectly, as is more meant for use with headphones rather than gaming headsets like the Phoebus.

Basically - STX is pretty similar to the Phoebus in games.
But the STX is a lot better than the Phoebus in music and films, and pretty much every other scenario.

If you're after noise cancellation, the PC360s are open back so that would be pointless.

I thought you were talking about noise cancelling headphones to prevent you from hearing background noise?

Most if not all audio drivers attempt to remove background noise from transmitting over your mic.

I was talking about the module thing you get with the pheobus. It has a microphone on it that you can set to pick up background noise and therefore remove background noise from your mic.

I was wondering if you could just plug a desk mic into your PC and use software to let it know that the desk mic if picking up ambient noise.

Then it could do some trickery and cancel it out.

pretty much any / all sound inputs can do that mate, you just turn the sensitivity to a level that suits the environment it's in tbh. If that is the only reason you're leaning to the phoebus... i wouldn't even call it a valid reason.

Technically the phoebus has sound quality more on par with the xense iirc, the STX being superior in that regard.

I got the phoebus for two reasons:

-It was on offer.

-I can have my old 2.1 logitech speakers plugged in to the front out and my HD650s plugged into the control box and either remove the hd650s jacks to auto revert to the speakers OR revert in software.

Couldn't get an answer from anyone as to whether the STX could do that.. it's important for me to be able to switch easily like that because the roof of my rv02 blocks immediate access to the card's outputs.

Sorry I missed your post NRG!, But I just recently got an STX.
In the Xonar Audio center ( the software for the card ) , in the main menu under analog out, the selections are "headphone , 2 speakers , FP headphone , FP 2 speakers". So you could have a set of speakers or headphones plugged in the card and another set of speakers or headphones plugged in the front panel and switch between them. But you have to switch between them manually , it won't do it automatically.

Just a program that allows you to switch outputs quickly is you frequently switch between headphones and speakers.

I have to agree that although I've never had an inherit need for it as I don't change my sound outputs that often it is VERY useful.

Will install it soon!
