Somebody mind telling me wtf this is?

There's no denying that this is less than ideal - probs more cost effective or easier to manufacture the cpu if you do not have to worry about the pins in the process.

Avoids bent CPU pins too?

I don't suppose this brings a bit of hamorny for cpu kits (as in lga775 socket kits will be compatable with the new socket?)

Unfortunately this normally means more profit for the chip maker rather than better prices for us.

Any intel skt775 mach2 users - please post your experiences with this type of socket..... good, bad and mofo ugly.

Cheers

if you look the heatsink holes are around the socket not in the weird x shape of hte lga775 platform, so shouldnt be too hard to mount a mach on it.

I think as desktop owners we are more interested in socket M = 940 pins IIRC which shouldnt have to resort to that sort of system.

If they do go for that with the Opterons though i think they will eventually go for it for all chips, wouldnt make sense to produce 2 type of chips in the long run.

I might have to start paying more attention when installing a CPU :(

from my experience this is a good idea, last cpu i recieved 4 pins bent :/ had to get out my light, magnifiying glass and a pin to bend them all back... luckily it worked :D

Would this affect how phase systems would be installed? (as the grease would usually go in the socket where the pins slide into, now its sorta reversed around...?)

You are right, it makes sense to have the gold contacts on the CPU. However the contacts on the board will be like gold spring pins - this setup has been used in the electronics industry for years.

The grease just goes everywhere anyway, so I can imagine it being annoying with that clamp system - but it will all be okay :)

You dont bother with the grease anymore, just make sure you have a seal, seems to work fine in the Vapochill kits.
