Here it is guys:

Finish overclocker Maki managed to overclock the card to 12278 in 3Dmark05. He overclocked the card from a default 625MHz core/1500MHz memory to a magnificent 877.5MHz core and 1980MHz memory. He used dry ice and he cooled the FX 57 to 3617.5 MHz to reach this score. This score is higher than normal non overclocked two Geforce 7800GTX in SLI as we tried to play with those two cards here. This little experiment shows one totally unexplored part of R520 chip as it can be overclocked sky high. Maybe this can help you make a buying decision.

Compare that to my volt modded single 7800GTX:

http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm05=1209179

Volt modded 7800GTX 610/1450, Mach2 R507, FX55SD 270*13, BH5 1:1 2-2-2-6

10307 marks

Consider that my PCI-E was running at 8x (not 16x as SLI was still enabled) CPU overclock is 100mhz less (and not dry iced) and my GPU RAM is 500Mhz less.

The X1800 score is still mighty impressive at nearly 2000 marks more in 05, but how much of that can you put down to the memory bandwdith supplied by 1980Mhz? Not enough I'm, afraid - this is a meaty piece of hardware.

Personally I am becoming more and more impressed by the information we now see filtering through on this much anticipated release from ATI.

It should be noted that the units used in this test have been confirmed as 'hand picked ultra golden samples' as it was part of the ATI marketing weekend in Ibiza.

I would expect mainstream overclocks on extreme cooling to be an amazing 800/1750.

Well i am not convinced by the R520 as a whole. Until better driver development comes along, ATI are in serious trouble.

Read the following articale, makes very interesting reading:

http://www.driverheaven.net/articles/efficiency/

Until the new R580 core comes out, the R520 core does look very efficient at all.

I am sorry to say, but i will soon be losing my love for all things ATI until they buck up there ideas at.

It may good for benchies, but i am afraid the G70 core as it is now, is the better gfx core on the market.

I think they're on the right track - but it's taken a hell of a long time to get there. I was totally impressed with the 7800GT as it goes, not only was it new tech, it was quick and it looked fab with the new run of games. I got a standard GT to 400 points under the speed of the GTX in the end, so these cards have scope as well.

Interesting read there Matrix mate - so you could almost extrapolate the information to give you a performance multiplier over the two cards which then allows you to see what sort of clocks you would need to achieve from the ATI unit to compete.

It could alomost be that my other suggestion is more likely then - that being the extra memory bandwidth being more than a little responsible for the awesome scores - meaning that the non-reference nvidia cards will need to employ a similar strategy (i.e use ram that overclocks above 1750 to compete).

Either way benchers will probably buy them........ me? not yet, I will wait until January I think now - just to see what is happening out there, the thought of replacing my motherboard is less than desireable, and of course physics chips are around the corner ;) .

Still not seen them in the shops in the UK yet so?? and once they hit the high street the next generation cards will be out and be faster still

also, for the average folks like me that only air cool, from what iv been reading will have limited overclocking scope as the cards get pretty toasty....so those kinda scores mean nothing to me (especially as its a hand picked sample) - price/performance wise the gtx still wins...and by the time an x1800xt is a competitive price (or even available - remember macci had an x800xtpe...remember trying to actually get one tho??) there will be something else thats better...

basically if 3dmark is your life youl have cash and the cooling to make the most of these cards - for everyone else the gtx will more than suffice ;)

Anyone seen X1800Xl results? As price wise that competed with 7800GTX

I am kinda lame for cussing the title - I am a small person with little else to do but pick holes in a title.

Clocked by one of the best clockers in the game, no doubt use handpicked cores. I don't care what people say, ATI aren't going to give these guys poor cores.

You can clock a GTX to insane levels and get the same score.

I think that performance wise the x1800xl gives the 7800GT a run for its money, especially when you put up resolution and AA+AF and all the new modes available. However, for us mere mortals the x1800xt will be around in November/December at full price and thats a bit painful IMO.

TBH, after the 5900 series I think its admirable that nvidia have managed to pull themselves together with the wonderful 6800GT and now the 7800GTX. Overall though, whichever you buy you will be able to play everything comfortably but probably push up to supersampling on the ATI cards.

Then again, nvidia works great in linux where you can't run 3dmark ;)

ATI's solution is good, but it should've been here to trounce 6800ultras royally. And then the 7800 to gain ground and then R580 to whack nvidia back into submission - its just the delay put the market out of sync.

Well some of that is true especially the first bit - but there are some people on this forum who are considered in the same league ;) but do not have the kit to go as extreme and I can tell you 12000 points in 05 on one 7800GTX is big ask of it - I agree not impossible, but no-one has done it yet, until then my little green friend it remains the best single card score ever so far.

I'm glad Mav moderates this section and he'll be able to tidy up your BS personally. Might I suggest an account suspension on top?

Maybe just some "time off" to make him realise you can't be so offensive over nothing.

EDIT: On the other hand the powers that be may be pissed off because of those tools on romulus 2 so he might have timed his breakdown badly.

Right guys I've had enough of this bickering so I have cleaned it up. Sorry if it doesnt read correctly now but I had to remove the hundred or so swearies. lol.. And Mr Grov has been suspended for a few days - hopefully he will have time to reflect on this.
