Single Slot cooler for 7900 GTX?

I thought I may as well ask here as although it is a question regarding the increasingly rare air cooling, you guys get through more graphics cards than the OCUK RMA team so one of you is bound to know lol

I'm planning a build at the moment which is going to revolve around me shoehorning the most powerful card I can into the smallest space possible.

Just to give you an idea of the dimensions I am on about, the motherboard is 170mm square and the case is only fractionally deeper than the length of the 7900 GTX. I know I am going to have to leave part of the cooler for the card outside of the case, but I don't really want to have a monsterous heat pipe asssembly sticking out of one side.

Is there a single slot aftermarket cooler for the 7900 GTX?

If not, what are the major differences between the 7900 GTX and the 7900 GT?

Hope someone can help!

Andy

I`ve not used a 79 yet, but because its a smaller tech node, it should be able to have less cooling than the 78. I`m guessing the extra cooling is so it can be set at higher speeds. There may be a small voltage increase, i`m not sure.

I`d say a single-slot copper 7800GT/GTX cooler would work. Your temps may be higher, or you may have to back off the clocks slightly though. AFAIK, all the aftermarket coolers are thick enough to technically use the PCI slot next to the card.

The differences between the 79GT and the GTX are technically just the coolers and speeds.

mini rigs are great!... I was looking at all-in-one dothan mobos the other day that are 12cm square...or...about the size of a CD. No space for a 7900 though :)

Any use?

I'm going the Core Duo route with a mini ITX motherboard. I was planning on using the Hoojum Cubit 3 case with a bit of modification as the case is limited as far as GPU space goes as it isn't really designed to accomodate one.

The inspiration came after looking at the Mac Mini as a possible download box after me filling my hard drives with HD Movies and deciding my current rig is waaaay to loud for a 24/7 rig being as it's in my room. The I found a Mini ITX board with a 16x PCi Express slot!

I'm thinking:

2 GHz Intel Core Duo chip

2 GB DDR2

7900 GTX

The board will be run off it's own dedicated PSU and the GTX off a Pico PSU if possible (the entire PSU is the size of an ATX connector) or some other kind of dedicated SFF PSU. Seeing as the GTX draws about 120 Wat peak rating, I can't see there being much of a problem power wise, it's just the whole fitting the card into the case thing.

Cheers for the advice Kenny, will go and have a shufti now.

what about a low end ATi card... they have onboard encoding in some form i think...

i dont know much about video encoding though, i just use TMPGEnc and be done with it :p

I'm looking to stick a card with a bit of grunt in there as I am running a Dell 2405 FPW and my 9800 Pro just doesn't cut the mustard.

If I can find a single slot cooler (of which happening I have much hope seeing as the 7900 GX2 uses a slimline single slot cooling solution) I can just about fit a 7900 in with a bit of modding :D

Why not get a mATX solution, i'm running an XQPack with a quiet 120mm fan, Liberty 500w, Opteron dual core cooler with 20cfm fan and a zalman vf700cu and its dead quiet even at full load.

It still allows me to have 2 hard drives (well 3), 2 opticals and expansion slots
