*sigh* Here we go again, me vs. a64

Well, I got my MSI Mobo back today, so happy--and surpsingly still are.

Got it posted on teh first try, great! Had all my junk in, etc. I immediately tried XP setup. It kept freezing! So i started trial and error, etc, my last try was to remove one of the sticks of 512MB GeIL Golden Dragon. I did, & BAM, xp setup works. I had the mem in 1 in slot 1 and the other in slot 2, like the manual says for ddr400. Finsihed xp setup, booted into windoze. Turned teh pc off, put the other 512mb into slot 3, so there were sticks in slot 1&3, this was another possible config in teh manual. Turned it on, before xp boots, "NTRDL" missing or someting like that. So, i take the otehr stick out again, and try to boot, same thing. Ive corrupted this many times in an old aXP system when overclocking ram...so i know it was the ram. now im reformatting again, and keeping just the 512in. Im very happy with the performance ive seen, its fast.

But, it really SUCKS taht i cant have 1gb.

it isnt supposed to do that..

Wel,i had my sb live out before, and now its in, maybe its that. Via's dont really like SB products, ive witnessed.

k i just took out teh sb live, lets se what happens. if it boots, ill try that other 512mb. maybe it was the sb all along; but im not taking any more chances for now.

I'm re-running xp setup for the third time.....ill get back to you all when its completed. ugh...yeh know what would be amusing, if the pc didnt like any of the geil ram and i had to re-sell it.

update: i just used the promise sata floppy to insall the drivers, lets se how this goes

or maybe i sell my p4 mobo and proc, and get a DFI LanParty UT socket 754 nForce 3!!!!! or, a MSI k8n socket754 nforce 3, but the dfi would be the clear choice.

Sounds crap Nick. I had an MSI board and got the same problem. It was an MSI Delta 2 Platinum Sckt A. Even though my RAM was on the supported list it did this a shedload.

Try lowering the FSB to 166 and see how you go (match the RAM and FSB as well. If you can boot after that then try the other DDR module and it may work. I know mine did.

Then I got p!ssed off running my XP 3200+ at 2800+ speeds and RMA'd it and put the XP back in the VIA chipset. I'll be damned if it didn't work 100% in that mobo!!

Is this nforce 3/4?

And if that doesn't work then check you GEIL's timings, the mobo may be setting them wrong.

Oh and check the vcore and RAM voltage - set it to standard 1.6v. You've probs done all this but hope some helps.

Have the ram @ 2.8v (warrented to 2.95v) and cpu vcore @ stock 1.5v.

ive decided that a new mobo would be the way to go, as a nforce 3 will work with my ram most likely, and will boost perofrmance substancially. why im not going socket 939 is becos im waiting for the new AMD Turion.

These four boards i have picked out. Budget for the new board has no limits-as i wil be selling my p4 mobo and proc as a combo.

Giga-byte, i know is a great company. I own one and i LOVe it. its a kickbutt board, oc's well, etc. if i could id buy another one, i would...no questions asked. any objections to this board?

ASUS...makes a lot of OEM boards, are very stable and reputable. They provide nice features generally, etc. Overclocking wise? Not sure. With the turion i plan to actually maintain an OC.

The dubbed best overclocker, the DFI. Envy'd by all, owned by few.

Last but not least, the MSI. I'm on my second MSI board and i love it. (even with all the problems, though my last experience with them was b etter). great oc'ers, high quality, etc.

So, what should i get? I really have my heart set on a gigabyte, but unless theres issues with them, or they dont oc well, then no. But, please point me in teh right direction.

i also like the dps on the gigabyte and the memory placement on the msi, a lot. the dfi has sweet uv reactive junk too---really nice.

i had this exact problem the geil memory has timings that are rated higher than can function on some boards set the timings to by spd or 2.5-4-4-8

have u tried putting each module in separately and seeing if you have a bad module ?

Forget turion man , Venice is just about here anyways. Most of the time you can pick up a socket 939 board for less than 130 dollars . Why go single channel when you can enjoy dual channel goodness .

And for the DFI board , its got insane amounts of tweaks so you need patience with that board ...... and from how much I know you , I would say you would go bald pulling ur hair out when you try to mess with the settings. And you do not tend to read up before buying ...... that could come back and hurt u when u get the system up and running.

So for you my friend , MSI Neo2 Platinum would be the perfect choice ....... easiest board that I have used till now to get it up and running and ocing as well.

when putting mine in i had my arm on the case with he psu plugged in for a live ground and i handled the board ONLY with static wrap LOL. so, either the DFI or the Giga-Byte.

I got my 1gb ram in, but the thing that was fuckin it up, was 2-3-3-6, its @ 2.5-3-3-6, 2.8v, cpu undervolted form 1.5v to 1.425v, folding max temp is 40ºC-42ºC. this thing HAULS ASS. its so fast, its crazy. thank you amd. my third amd, my fourth via. lovin it all.
