Should i OC my 6800gt?

Hey

I have a 6800gt with a 2500barton oc'ed to 3200. Currently im using cheap 512mb RAM, but im upgrading in a few weeks to a goooood set of 2x512 sticks.

First up, is my system (or will it, with the new ram) be bottlenecking my graphics card. I think it will personaly but thought i'd ask. Secondly, if it is bottlenecking it, would I notice any improvments by overclocking it? I guess not, if it is already unable to run fully at even stock settings, right?

Thanks

Hi Kyle!

I had a 3200+ Barton with 512mb RAM (do you have DDR400?) and the same card (but a BFG one). I OC'd it to 420/1100 and it stayed stable fine. I could then play all settings on full in Farcry (make sure you put them on Very High and water on Ultra in Farcry with the patch 1.3 applied - it then enable SM3.0 and works very fast), most on full in HL2 and and Doom 3 on Very High.

Sooo....yeah I would OC it unless you have a lifetime warranty that you would want to keep (like I have...HAD lol) :D Oh - and you have a cool case!!

EDIT: And check my coolbits guide here

Haha yeah I bloody love my case.

Im gunna get my RAM in and then re-sleeve my cables, then get some new pics and post my rig on here. Its not really in a worthy state at the moment...lol.

About the GT - so I will notice a difference? Sounds good to me. This RAM is 2700, but im gunna get this ram:

(Second one down) - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Corsair_XL.html

Once I get it in i'll read some guides about doing my GT

Thanks bro + rep

edit: didnt see your edit, checking now :)

Hmmm

Cant get this coolbits file to add to the reg?

Says "Cannoy import C:\blahblah\coolbits.reg: The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor"

I compiled it in notepad? Any ideas? lol

edit: had to include "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00" at the top..lol silly me.

OK then mate - no probs.

About the RAM - Corsair is very good, yes...but:

1: Overclockers UK arent the best - in fact their reputation sucks a lot and they package their stuff really badly - not a good thing at all. Also their customer service is totally sh!te. If you need to RMA then you'll never get a refund/replacement within a month. I can't stress how cr@p they are for lots of people (including me)

2: OCZ rocks the big one - I'd get this stuff from Kustom PC's who have the best customer service in the UK!

Get it at Kustom PC's trust me when I say - you won't be dissapointed in any way.

I'm sure others will support me when saying the OCZ is excellent and Kustom PC's rock!

You never void your warranty OC/ing. They can't detect it, so how the heck are they gonna find out?

Did you get it workig then? You have to save it as a .reg file first then open it again.

Thanks for the tip off. I've had trouble, costing me £150, with ebuyer, so I dont want a repeat. I was gunna order from either Overclockers or Novatech (I KNOW novatech are great.)

I've heard nothing but good things about KustomPC's either so i'll give them a look in.

That RAM choice isnt final, either, im waiting till I have the money saved then i'll likley make a topic on here :D

I've put the core frequency up a little bit, gunna try a little HL2 for a minute to see if it makes any noticable difference. I may put it up a bit more but im waiting for RAM really. Cheers for the tips though, I had no idea how to OC a graphics card till 5minutes ago  :D

No probs mate - enjoy - that's why we're all here!

HL2 won't make too much difference as its written pretty well anyway but Farcry will deffo.

Running it at Ultra speeds deffo will!!

Well, i clicked test performance settings. Its automaticaly set my Core Clock Frequencey to 371Mhz, and my Mem Clock Frequence to 1.04ghz.

But im afraid to click apply :)

Reckon this is worth a test as long as I dont click "apply these settings on start up" (Taking into account heat etc., which i'll keep an eye on)? I really really dont wanna break this card haha.

Yeah - those settins sound fine. In fact my 6800GT came with 370clock speed out of the box! Give it a go and run RTHDRIBL, HL2, Farcry, 3dmark03, aquamark and Halo (if you have it). If all seems fine, then it ill OC a beut!!

Remember to tick: "fan always on"

On the screenshot you have 388/1.05

Is that the OC you're using atm, or just an example screenie?

Edit: god im a moron, didnt see bottom screenie.

No probs. generally I run @ 400/1.05 and its al stable as hell. Never any worries about anything including temperature!

Wow, i was getting 10200 on factory settings on 3dmark03. (Used to be 13,000ish before i lost my 1gb of ram so im hoping it'll be that at stock when i get the new kit)

Runnig at 380/1.04 now and getting 11086, GPU temps reading 64-65. If thats a good temp then....great! Lol alot for this man :D :D :D

Well BFGTech say that the card is fine at anything below 90degC. Yours are fine though - perffect. See the difference?? Good isn't it? :D

I couldn't agree more with this statement... Look into some Rev. 2 EL Platinum PC3200 or Gold VX PC4400 if you want the best of the best on the market :D
