Shadow of Mordor requires 6GB of VRAM?

I was talking about render resolution being higher than display resolution for increased visual quality - saw some of this demonstrated recently and was surprised by the difference. Needed a chunk more GPU power and VRAM of course.

There are a few too many unknowns currently, so I'm going to wait and see how things turn out - it'll be interesting regardless.

These new "need 6gb VRAM for best visual quality" games might be game changers, or it may just be a case of 10% "better" visuals for 50% more VRAM. Like with AA every additional increase makes things better, but returns are diminishing and performance can tank.

Happy to wait and see how SoM reviews and maybe how it performs / looks first hand if I decide to buy.

Scoob.

Every review has been pretty impressive so far with Polygon giving it 9.5

Seeing all these games that state you need 4-6 gb of vram to max makes me slightly sad, since I bought a second gtx 780 last Saturday and they only have 3 GB of memory. Still hope it only has something to do with super high res uncompressed textures with an option to run some comparable encoded ones.

If it does, it could be a good thing, I hear people saying all the time, "I wish they'd make a game that would use all the hardware I have purchased to it's fullest."
Maybe they are...finally

Preordered this a while ago. Got it on CDkeys for $39 then got the season pass on steam for $17.49 and needless to say i still payed less for the retail price! Was the only reason i bought it.

Remember when we had 1GB Vram cards and everyone said that the 2GB on the newer cards would never be fully used?

I'm waiting to see how the game is before I buy it, i'm not to excited about it to be honest.

I remember buying a Radeon 9200 512MB card thinking the ram made all the difference...
it did not..
256MB 9800Pro (flashed to an XT) was my next buy :D what a freakin beast she was

oh! my 980 is obsolete, hasnt even been delivered yet!

Im assuming it needs the vram because the textures arent optimized!

:rollinglaugh:

I'm not sure if to get this game or not tbh, can't make my mind up. But if it does require 6GB...I'll pass. The lag would be shouting "You shall not..pass!"

That's only ultra textures on, I imagine it's more than playable with High mode textures.

Graphics options menu doesn't scream 'bad port' to me tbh.. the fact it describes each setting in detail (i.e. proper layered alpha transparency, and how much memory it uses etc) doesn't really say 'bad port' to me...

Edit: No SLi support yet (yet)

Just watched that video myself, TB gets fairly decent performance. With new drivers this should improve further too.

Seeing as this game has a benchmark tool I'd really like to see Tom try to get hold of a copy for future reviews.

Yeah he was running on a single titan with almost full settings (ambient occulsion and textures on high only i think) and averaged above 60.. pretty damn good.

Took me about 5 hours to download yesterday at mostly 2.4MB/s.. that 33.9GB download:p

Running a 7950 with 14.4 drivers. I'll report back with the benchmark results after i figure out how each setting effects performance and whats the highest i can achieve FPS and Settings wise.

Avg for my default settings was 56.11 fps and min was 23.58fps. Only used 2.1GB Vram with everything set to Ultra except Textures and Ambient Occlusion.. gonna set both to ultra and report back how that goes.

Well scratch all that.. the built in benchmark after doing about 5 tuns is very inconsistent. At first i was getting about 56-57fps and my min was about 23-24fps but on my 5th run im now getting 67fps and 22fps min with same settings. Turned on Ultra textures and now my fps has gone up to 69fps with a min of 10... yep makes no sense. however my Vram has shot up to 3GB. Maxed that out for sure for no visual differences so far as i can briefly tell.

loving it so far 8% in and it's great :)

benchmarked at 64fps average, will do another tomorrow and record results

That's on all ultra, with the HD pack installed.. it's been fine for me :) The odd stutter here and there, but barely noticeable. Worthit in my opinion

Also, it's not utilising my second card at all at this point.

Downloading the HD pack now.. another 3.7GB.. Damn this game is a space hog.

so thats 3gb > stutter then..
great news for me and my 1gb vram woo hoo lol.

Very minimal, barely noticable tbh. but yeah 1gb ram will definitely not cut it for ultra. The thing is you have plenty of options to turn down if you have less vram.

To be fair, 1gb isn't really enough for most new releases in reality though :P

it extracts to 10GB ;)

Worth every single megabyte :)
