Ok ivery got a choice between the beyerdynamics DT770 or sennheiser HD598 for Christmas. I game 70% of the time the rest is music and movies.

These will be my first REAL set of headphones so which would be better??

I have the Dt770 Pros and I really like them. Very 'full' sound and really comfy :). They look a bit cheap but to be fair they feel pretty solid.

I use the HD598 and love them great sound and very comfortable and they don't touch your ears which is a major plus also i wear glasses when on PC and they don't press the arms into your head so really great that way too

The 598 is a more musical headphone, and has a bigger sound stage, which should be better for gaming. It's also open-backed, so if you're in a dorm or spouse situation it might not be the best idea. The 770 is a lot more bassy, which may appeal if you listen to music that calls for it, but you do sacrifice overall quality for it; in addition, they're closed so no leakage. Comfort is basically even, but the 770 pads are a personal favourite for me.

End of the day, comes down to which sound signature you'll like more and whether open/closed makes a difference to you.

Also, what are you using as a source..? The 32ohm 770's and the 598 might be fine without an amp (although they will still benefit), but the higher ohm 770s will struggle in terms of volume without an amp.

I've got the sound blaster Z which claims to power 600ohm's so I should be ok. I've always used cheager gaming headsets and this is an upgrade from my corsair vengeance 2000. Is the sound leakage in the hd598's enough that it would annoy my wife in the room next door?

Please for the love of all things PC, Ditch the "Z" card as soon as you can, I cannot be more serious when I say they are complete dog crap compared to anything Asus has and even worse compared to an amp/dac of similar cost.

I had a ZX card for a whole week, Changed over to a Xonar D2X which is now in my mates rig and the difference was huge, The Creative cards are very low end with a mid-high end price tag, Again, They are utter dog skat.

I agree with Dice, I had the Recon3D and it was utter garbage, I'm using an old X-Fi PCI-e card and I prefer that!

Dt 770s get my vote if you go for the higher ohm versions. Though since they are closed it will bother your ears if you are sensitive to that kind of thing. If you prefer open headphones get the DT990s.

Also with any of the headsets you will need either a soundcard or an external amp/dac.

The backs of the headphones are completely open so they are essentially speakers, therefore if you run them loud enough you will be able to hear them in another room, especially if doors are open. However, at sane listening levels you shouldn't have a problem.

+1 to this, the current-gen creative stuff is very bad. I understand we all have to make-do sometimes, but this source will definitely limit the performance of both of these headphones, most notably I think the sound stage on the 598 will suffer quite badly; sound stage is usually the first thing to get iffy when using a sub-par source. I would personally recommend upgrading to a fiio e10k, since DACs are in my opinion better value for money; but being a gamer you may want some features such as dolby headphone or mic enhancement, in which case any of the Asus Xonar range will be appropriate.

The last good cards to come from Creative were both the X-Fi Titanium fatal1ty Pro and the Titanium HD.

Until Creative bring out a proper successor to those I wouldn't touch that company with a barge pole.

Ok I've just made an offer on a Xonar D2X after all your advice and I'm still in 2 minds about the headset although I'm swaying towards the hd598
