Security Software

Hey,

I just switched to sky broadband and it came with free Mcafee which i planned on using until i found out there is no XP 64 bit driver :cussing:

So, i need to get some. I have been looking at Kapersky which seems like good value and is compatible with my OS.

Is it any good though or are there any others that are better value ?

I use Kapersky... and would recommend it to others. One thing worth noting tho...if you use Logitech's Web Cam software (with the face virtualizations) it will clash with Kapersky and will slow boot times to a crawl.

Having used many different packages...I always go back to AVG.

No i dont use any webcam.

I think i will try the free AVG stuff for now and then probably buy the Kapersky later if i need to.

I've used both Avg and avast, but i think i prefer the latter.

For me at least it is less resourse hogging.

I use AntiVir

It's free, has good protection, uses hardly any resources and it updates really quickly.

I've never used it on 64bit windows, but notice on the site they have a 64bit version available

If you feel you need a firewall I could recommend one too, just say the word. As far as anti virus programs go I have never found the ones you pay for to be signficantly better then Avira's personal edition, at least not enough to merit the price and in some cases resource usage. Just my two cents.

I use AVG, and windows defender, which are both free. No need for anything else as quite honestly there's just no need if your PC is setup properly and you have common sense. I only run defender as it appears to use virtually no resources. I have AVG to scan only a few file types realtime.

Adaware, spybot, spyware doctor are all rubbish tat. I repair pcs daily with infections (my job), I can clear near enough anything just using gmer in a matter of minutes usually. Anything else I use Super antispyware, without fail.

gmer is a really top bit of software.

Hmmm....I'll have to try that Gmer bit out. It looks nice. As for Spybot and Adaware they don't catch much, but it's nice to have them around anyway just in case they happen to catch something another program doesn't. As for Spyware Doctor it tends to be fairly good at cleaning off trace spyware, adware and the like so I don't completely understand your beef with it. Of course if you keep a clean PC most of this software really isn't that necessary, but in a pinch or after a blockheaded moment they can be useful.

As for AVG I've always found Antivir to be more affective on any of the computers I've had the pleasure of cleaning off. It also seems to be lighter on resources, though to each his own.

True, when cleaning other peoples PCs.. I bring out the big guns. But my own... I use nothing. So weird that people spend money on firewalls and the like.. but still get viruses and Spyware.

I use nothing(been over this before) no firewall no anti-virus, just a hardware firewall in the router.

Have yet to get something, been running like this since I started... a good 7 years ago.

I guess it depends on if you trust your sources.

I tend to download the odd bit of iffy stuff, i.e. a WMV with a licence and embedded stuff *could* end up giving you an infection should some exploit be found for example. I tend to run software im unsure of in a virtual machine though, i.e. keygens etc.
