Second screen goes black.

Hi All,

I have two screens a 27" Iiyama Prolite G2773HS and a 22" Dell 2208WFP both connected by DVI, the Dell is my second screen and more often than not when I load a game up the screen goes black and stays that way, if I keep Alt+tabbing out then back in the game it eventually sorts it self out but I was wondering if there is something I have done to make it do this?

Any help appreciated.

Mine does this too on certain games, and I always just assumed it was a feature of some games that made it happen. If there's a way to keep the second screen active while the primary display is in a game, I'd love to know too :)

Well if you keep Alt+tabbing in and out you can get it to stay active but I don't want to have to keep doing that.

I have asked a couple of people I game with one of which has a better gfx card than me and one that has a worse card than me and both say they don't get the same issue at all.

If I'm not mistaken it's due to some conflict between DX10/11 games and Aero and/or games that don't support dual monitors(normal behaviour in those cases).
Just enable Disable desktop composition(Aero) in the compatibility options of the game's exe and it will be disabled only when you run the game.

If that was the case then everyone would get the same issue, but I game with around about 20 other people and I am the only one this happens to and I have one of the best PC's.

Hmmm... I've actually connected my old monitor to see if I can set it to go black when I start a game and I actually can't find any settings to allow me to do that.
Try the following:

  • set Power Options to High Performance
  • in Nvidia Control Panel -> Manage 3D Settings, set Power Management to maximum performance and Multi-Display/mixedGPU to Multiple Display Performance Mode
  • when in-game press alt+enter twice, to go windowed then back to fullscreen
  • when in-game press winkey+P, go to any settings, then back to Extend
  • if all that fails are you running the latest driver? if so restore defaults(from Manage 3D Settings)
  • else reinstall the latest driver and use this http://www.wagnardmobile.com/DDU/ between installs to remove every trace of the previous driver/config

It's just certain games, BF4 used to do this on my setup but now doesn't.. could be drivers, could be a specific game exe. Nothing to worry about.

I tried these and the alt+enter and winkey+p worked but kinda thought they would anyway as alt+tabbing out is kinda the same thing.

Never messed with the drivers as this has always happened even with my old gfx680.

I even tried running my secondary as my primary and I got the same results.

Really stuck for what could be causing this now.

Not sure what else is there to try.
I've read up a bit about this occurrence and some people say this is normal yet it doesn't happen to everyone, some say it's a conflict between aero and dx10/11 games and disabling it seems to fix it for everyone.

that's a good point, it hasn't done it since i disabled aero actually.

I know I could do that but that is a workaround and not the solution, think I will get in touch with Microsoft and see what they say about it.

Thanks for all the help with this though people.

If I get anywhere with it I will post on here what I find.

Well no actually it *is* the solution... that's what is causing the problem fella. Aero is just a resource hogging thing anyway, should be turned off for a gaming rig !!

You can do this in the exe options if you can't be bothered to do it permanently, turn off "desktop composition on launch" in the compatibility options. That should sort it

No it *isn't* the solution it *is* a workaround otherwise everyone who plays games that has at least two screens would have the same issue and have to do that, making it the solution to the problem.

Like I said I will get in contact with Microsoft and see what they say.
