SATA II HDD at 320GB?

Hello ppl,

after I considered the recommendations of fellow members, today I finally ordered the following gear. :dribble:

MB> ASUS P5Q-E

CPU> Intel Core2Quad Q9550

PSU> Corsair TX650W

RAM> OCZ Reaper DDR2 PC2-9200 4GB

HS> Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme

GPU>ASUS ENGGTX-285

Case>HAF-932

Blue-Ray drive>LG GGC-H20L

DVD drive>LG GH22LP

I'm currently looking for a good (which means fast and quiet) mainstream hard disk but the reviews on the Internet seem contradicting each other.

One review praises the Seagate Barracuda 700.11 (already have one in my current pc) and says to absolutely avoid the Samsung Spinpoint, while the other review shows benchmarks which state that the Spinpoint is actually better than the Seagate.:banghead:

I could use some help with this. I want to buy an 320GB SATAII HDD because later I will couple it with another one in RAID and I surely don't need more than 600GB. Which one would you recommend? The price should not exceed 45€ (60$/40£) Thanks for your help up until now! U guys rule. :wavey:

I got a barracuda and caiviar black in mine.

I think that the black is slighlty faster. But it is bit noisier.

Yeah Caviar Black's are nice. On the new OC3D server there is a 1TB F1 and two 750GB Blacks in RAID1. The Blacks actually perform better (under Linux at least).

I finally decided for the Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB (MPN: ST3500418AS). Bought a couple of these since they costed 47€ each. So, at the list above you can add:

2 Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB and...

1 IIYAMA 22" Widescreen HD monitor :D (I have a 17" monitor the last 7 years)

This disk, according to the 2009 Storage Charts list of Tomshardware, embarrasses even the VelociRaptor since, in almost all cases, it has the same performance with it but costs the 1/4 of the VelociRaptor's price. Not to mention the fact it is much quieter!

The WD Caviar Black comes mostly at the middle of the charts (11th position) falling faaar behind.

Details can be found at http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2009-3.5-desktop-hard-drive-charts/benchmarks,50.html

It's a great list since it is fully updated with all the new models and also complete, offering dozens of detailed charts. :)

At last! The reading of reviews and ordering PC components has come to an end. phewww...

Greetings

e.g. Jim you have an AWESOME avatar haha!!! I love it.

bit late as you have already decided but, I like the spinpoints I have 2 750 F1's and they are bloody fast, and quite(they run cool as well 19-21C)

I wouldn't go for a 750GB HD anyways so I guess its OK :) I hope I took the right decision because, as said, the list I referred to is a 2009 list, and all these contradicting reviews I read are dated back to 2006, so the new models were not in there.

Now, if another 2009 review comes out saying the opposite of what the above mentioned list states, then I give up lol...this could be going on to the end of time :)
