Had a dvd drive do something like this to some1 whilst I was on holiday.
To cut to the problem with their drive, there was a cd for their printer drivers, when this cd was attempted to be used, the dvd drive just refused to read it. Immediately after it woudn`t read anything, dvds/music/whatever.
Rebooted the pc and the drive failed as soon as the driver cd was used.
Turned the pc off and on, stuck a dvd in first and it read it fine. Then the music one - fine. Then driver cd for the printer and it worked. And continued to work.
Only thing I noticed with the driver cd was that it was mm smaller than the other discs.. why that would do anything I don`t know.
With any luck it may work for u, big longshot tho.
The thing is, I dont remember getting a driver CD. I definately dont have one though.
EDIT - Ooh! Wait a minute, it reads my motherboard CD.

I got this error;
---------------------------
SETUP.EXE - Application Error
---------------------------
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000006). Click on OK to terminate the application.

OK

EDIT - I inserted the motherboard disc, It shown up on My Computer and then I clicked it, i got the error above but then when i removed the disc it still showed the motherboard disc. I put in another disc and it couldnt read them. It seems only to be happening with DVD's.
I only got the actual DVD drive 5 days ago, do you think if I return it they will swap it for another one?
If it doesnt work, or i dont find a good solution within the next 2-3 days, Ill just bite the bullet and get another one. They are only 20 quid, but its pointless wasting a perfectly good piece of hardware.
