RX480 Crossfire or Single 1070?

Well I finally have the money to go crazy and buy a new graphics card.
So, do I splurge on the GTX 1070 or a pair of RX 480's?

I have no preference I just want as much power as I can get for the money I have.

Cheers

Two RX480s will cost you a bit more, crossfire is going to be a problem from time to time, power consumption and temps will be higher, but they'll perform slightly better when crossfire works properly. You'll also have to wait until aftermarket cards release, i wouldn't get two reference cards, definitely not in crossfire.
I faced the decision myself and decided that the hassle and increased price wasn't worth it and got a 1070.

The ultimate goal is to watercool my entire system, so temps aren't a major concern power draw well I do need to pick up a new power supply soon.
That and well two cards looks awesome IMO.

Well then two cards are definitely going to cost more than one. If you are willing to take the risk of having crossfire not working from time to time then for a waterloop project two RX480s would probably be more interesting.

I've been telling myself since I built my first rig that I will watercool one day and now I finally have the time and money two cards would be awesome but the only question I have is how often is it not going to be smooth sailing

Avoid any more than one GPU until things get sorted out. Right now we are in a transition from AFR into EMA and IMA. It will be a while before you start to see full support, so for the love of god stay away from Crossfire now.

Crossfire will be gone when the dust settles but until you start to see IMA or EMA in every game I would avoid.

If you can get a used with warranty or new 980ti cheaper than the 1070 then do that. If not I would bite my lip and buy a 1070, though the prices suck atm.

The last eight months or so of games have not worked with SLi or Crossfire. It's because we are starting to make a transition so yeah, wait until that has concluded before considering going with more than one GPU.

Price isn't really a thing for me, I've been scrimping and saving the money for a new card for a while so I've got the cash for a 1070 or dual RX480's.
The only thing I care about is performance to be honest

Well if it's pure performance you are after a single 1070 will be slower than dual 480s. But I'd really advise getting after market cards so they aren't power limited
