How many Tessellation units does the 6970 have?
running a gtx480 @ gtx580 speeds ?

a few months ago SCAN was selling ASUS and other 480's for £180 with FARCRY 2. Sold out now and cheapest is about £250. Was wanting 1 so to backup my system. ahh £359 on SCAN for a poxy overclock, 30mhz etc, POV. poxy because it's expensive. MSI £329 is still expensive. Have to look about or ebay for a respectful price

So why is it that Nvidia has 15 tess units while the 6970 has 2, but not hardly any gain with the 15 tess units?

Ye I too want to know more about micro articheture. I found sum:
AMD has improved the tessellation hardware - Cayman features a new 8th generation tessellation unit. Improved over Barts' 7th generation unit, Cayman offers two units - one per graphics engine. Additional performance boosts come from an off-chip geometry buffer, giving up to three times the tessellation performance of Cypress, and 50% more than Barts. Given that there are two tessellation units, this means at a 1:1 basis the 8th generation unit is slower than Barts' tessellation unit. This could indicate that AMD is shifting from a large tessellation unit to multiple smaller units, like Nvidia.
Somewhere I read lower grade AMD GPUS's don't have dedicated tesselation engines. I guess that's in respect of real time gaming and the card can render tesselation for graphic designers, i dunno, they are quite bad at real time stuff.

I read nVidia started designing for tesselation in GeForce from the 400's. AMD has done it since 2001 i guess for gaming GPU's. I guess nVidia has done that for the old Quadro non-gaming type stuff.

Nearly had a Gigabyte GTX480 SOC bought for £220 someone else nabbed it.
at least i won't have a higher eleccy bill!
