running a gtx480 @ gtx580 speeds ?

what clocks do you have to use to get a gtx480 to run at the same performance as a stock gtx580 ? , i want to know cause i would like to see if it is worth buying one for my system

I would guess around 820core and 1650mem on the 480 would evenly match up to the 580.

GTX480

  • Chipset Manufacturer: NVIDIA
  • Core Clock: 700MHz
  • Shader Clock: 1401MHz
  • Stream Processors: 480 Processor Cores
GTX580

  • Chipset Manufacturer: NVIDIA
  • Core Clock: 772MHz
  • Shader Clock: 1544MHz
  • Stream Processors: 512 Processor Cores
matching vlock to clock and shadar to shader will even out the performance but the extra cores on the 580 will still blow the 480 away in some benches and fps. Also add to the fact that you'll have to pump the voltages a bit to make the 480 match the 580 clocks and shader you'll also increase the temps of the already warm to hot 480 the 500 series cards have already proven to be alot cooler even when oc'd

There is gigabyte gtx480 soc and msi gtx480 lightning that runs gtx580 speed, but wont beat them in any test. Both are reviewed here.

true but his question was performance thats why i stated what i did. I think you were agreeing with me but I wanted to make sure as we all know speed and performance are not the same thing

You can make your 480 a 570 clock for clock, as they're essentially the same in all but name and cooler.

Be interesting to know what %age oc you need to get to match a 580 performance tho. Logic would suggest 6-7% more. Run a 580 at stock-stock 772 and a 480 at 826 ish would carry that suggestion.

I know the 480 will bench well in excess of 826, I'd have to check with the person I set one up for, but I'm sure we settled for 775 wussy oc for 24/7 on what eventually looks like a zotac amp. Not my decision, I'd have gone around 800 with such a good cooler.

hi.

I don't know how much OC and I think both will have advantages in different areas, 580 dominating, it has more processing components.

The 400's have a faster transistor i read on a legit review. The 48o GF100 transistors spills more electricity, runs hotter and performes better. The 480 has more memory than the 570.

The 580 GF110 has same size memory as the 480 and more everything else I think, still using slower transistors.

Rastlovich the GF110 is quite differnt to the GF100. Worst I've seen the 570 do is about 20% FPS, stability against the 480 in Metro benchmark at critical parts, tested by Trubitar on Youtube, stock clocks. Memory is a big player in Metro 2033. I mean considering GF110 is like a FERMI refresh

I think the big downfall with the 580 is the 1.5gb memory. The chip is so fast and the memory lacks. it should AT LEAST have 2gb.

dunno about that bro might be but with my 570 I rarely use more than 75% of the ram according to afterburner's OSD I run while gaming.

What resolution you playing at bro. They 580 may be faster at low resolution but the 6970 will take it at or near 2560x1600.

1920x1200 but I didnt see where he said he was going for that huge of rez. as far as I can tell he's going single gpu with a single monitor. I think somewhere it got started comparing apples to oranges. I normally think when someone makes a post like this one there referring to 1920x1080 unless they say otherwise.

Well currently games are using higher and higher resolutions. Even at 1080p 1.5gb may only be good for another 4-6 months. This generation needs 2gb cards now.

ye 2GB is needed, when I used 1 480 I got bottlenecks so had to lower settings, mainly in Metro 2033 1920x1080. EVGA has a GTX580 2GB

well maybe the 400 series cards bottleneck with only 1gb of ram??? but with both my 500 series cards 560ti and now 570hd I havent seen more than 75% mem usage. now I am talking single monitor when running 2 I see warmer temps and more mem usage. But I beleive this post is referring to single monitor at max settings.

just remember compare apples to apples not to oranges lmao

480 has 1.5 Gig RAM like the 580 and is quite alot better at Metro than the 570-1.2Gig RAM when special effects need to be processed according to a test shown on Youtube.

Metro needs about 1-2.6 Gig of Ram at 1920x1080 I've seen, especialy when enhancing it with nVidia 3D control pannel. It should be the same with all cards and the memory frequency makes a difference.

try the newish avp my gtx480 uses 1530mb of vram according to afterburner , what does it use on the gtx570/580 ?

need more info to correctly answer that question bro what game or app do you see that usage on?? I know in crysis and crysis2 as well as BFBC2 I dont see more than 75% usage with my 1.2gb 570HD

now my reply before I saw ur post above lol

man this has gotten way off topic lmao all he asked is what clocks were needed to match the 580's performance for his 480 the short answer is you match clock to clock and shader to shader but without the extra processing cores you wont match it period. Plus you'd have to oc the crude out of an already warm card to get there. IMHO just get a 580 and be done with it. the 500 series of cards are just so much better at temp and noise control than the 400 series is. Not to mention is oc'n you would be able to push that 580 well away from any point a 480 could touch it.

Mm the 2 cards are like in a different category so matching them would be random i think, ofc depending on app behaviour etc. I've had 2 +/- Gig usage in Crysis

but ur running sli'd 480's right??? so maybe they need more mem to keep up?? all I know is my 570 barely breaks a sweat in any game I play atm. Been wanting to try metro2033

Ye thanks

I did have the memory OC'd between 1900-2100 so it should be the similar to 570 & 580, that's V Sync'd and enhanced with 3D control pannel uses quite alot more space. I haven't tried Metro with this driver, will do

Crysis is sweet now, patched and nVidia drive
