Ripping DVDs to Hard Disks?

Can it be done? I know you can do it very easily with CDs, which I do all the time (loseless :D) but I don't know of anything that can do the same with DVDs. Sure would be alot easier having my DVD collection on this PC so I can watch any DVDs I like without going through the collection, even watch them on the media PC downstairs.

Does anyone know any good software if it exists?

(Also just fyi I am not going to become some kind of pirate...)

Would this be like ripping images to be loaded into a virtual dvd drive or ripped to be encoded into Xvid or x264? Either way, for the actual ripping, DVD Decrypter is my pick

+1

I always use it. Not that I sell or re-distribute in anyway. :X

Ideally just ripping to a hard disk, avoiding virtual disks like Daemon Tools if possible.

I will give Format Factory a try, be nice being able to watch all my films downstairs without finding them up here! Although my 54mb wireless will probably disagree. Ta guys, didn't know any software like this existed.

I use DVDFAB

Ripped all mine into full images as i use ps3mediaserver to send it to my ps3 (accepts the images and transcodes real time) for full quality

But it also allows xvid etc. encoding

Right, I will give them all a try, Format Factory seems ok, but I can't help but feel using my duallie over my quad is a poor choice :D

Might have to use the quad if it gets the job done a billion times faster

Trying DVD Decrypter now, as that seemed the next easiest. I think it is putting them in such an order that I need DVDShrink to watch them... which defeats this entire excercise of being able to watch them easily over a network etc. Oh well, time will sell. If I could get a decent quality .avi I would be happy, but the .avi and .mp4 I have done are a bit... poop quality.

I want to be able to use em on my MP3 player/MP4 player, it can do .avi's, and if my Mum/Smelly sister wants to watch one of my DVDs (for some reason...) she can easily double click a movie, I doubt she can load an image.

i use dvd decrypter, rip to vobs, ifo's etc, mediaportal on my htpc with plays them fine with menu's intact.

If i want avi (to use for the xbox) i do a simple convert using autogk. Produces pretty good results.

hmm, I see myself having the same problem with MP3s here.. the MP3 player ideally wants them small, I want them .wav and loseless, the MP3 player wants compressed .avi and I want vobs :D I am sure we can have a mixture in the end... :D

h264 encoded mp4's are the best to be honest, great quality. But you can use VLC for images - it can play .iso's of dvds
