Removing XP from a dual boot with 8.1

always shouting
Hi guys,

I was stupid last weekend and decided to install XP without doing any research or anything and later found out that there were no driver support for XP. D'oh!

So now I have Win 8.1 and XP. Well I formatted the XP drive. I tried to use EasyBCD to remove the XP entry but every time I reboot it still tries to boot into XP unless I change it to "Wait for user selection"

If I set 8.1 to default and first on the list it still tries to boot into XP, same with Hard Drive and if I remove Hard Drive it still tries to boot to XP.

Here is another with a more detailed entry.

I looked on Google and MS had something on there about using BCDEdit in command prompt but I was too chicken shit to try it.

If you guys have any ideas I would appreciate it but it's no biggy if not, I have an 8.1 USB stick with everything I need on there to start again anyway :)

It's really weird that the XP Bootloader overtakes the one of the newe Windows 8.1. I'd say change your 8.1 Drive to the main boot option in the bios, but as you said even when you completely remove the XP drive it still tries to boot XP?

In your first screenshot, what if you set Windows 8.1 as the default and uncheck Windows Boot manager? Be careful with EasyBCD though, in my experience it has always been a bit shit as it just kept removing ALL my bootloaders and I kept having to reinstall Windows.

I decided to wipe the system and start again after everything I tried just resulted it in trying to boot into XP apart from the boot manager. Lesson learned, never dual boot with XP. Thanks for the help guys!

I'm posting this from a Windows ME VM.

With anything like this I always do a complete reinstall anyway.

It is something I don't mind doing as it is good practice to re install windows at regular intervals, as it gets rid of any problems and rubbish lurking on your PC.

I do agree, there's nothing nicer than a freshly installed Windows and all the essential programs installed.

These days you can install Windows and all essential stuff within half an hour.

If you want to run older OSes just use virtual machine stuff (like Virtualbox). Its also great if you want to see how viruses break things and how screwed a version of XP without patches is.

I will from now on. I did have XP on a VM and thought I'll install it on another drive and have a dual boot. But I was careless and didn't look into things first and found out there were virtually no drivers for XP.

I'm running ME on VMWare 30 day trial. Youtube won't run on IE5 :(

Get virtualbox. Its free. I had a version of it running on my AMD pc with windows 7 and xp on it.

Thank you, I'm not sure if I'm allowed to ask this but I want to play around with viruses/scripts on WindowsME but no idea where to look. If it's inappropriate then delete this post.

If you want to see what viruses do, you can literally go around and download stupid virus stuff (like toolbars and custom cursors and screen savers) from the internet. I'll say this now though, there are viruses out there that can break through the visualization software and infect your host PC. Pretty rare though as they are mainly aimed at companies that use virtual servers.

I'll try that, Thanks again.
