So you'd think I'd practice on me venice cpu?

Nope I removed the IHS on the FX60 today - took me about 30mins of careful cutting and cost me £4.99 for some craft knives from B&Q.

Putting one back on? - I leave that to the experts ;)

has it made a big diferance in temps mate, i know you have got to be carfull when puting the heatsink on as you can crush the chip.

anyway let us know how much differance it has made to the temps.

Not so much to be honest which proves that the IHS contact on this CPU was very good.

What it allows me to do is to introduce a thermal shim of differing materials to see if I can overcome the cold bug inherant with all 2005 built FX60's.

Thsi baby will do 3ghz on air using stock volts so it's a good CPU for air or water - introduce phase and your in a world of disappointment :(

I am about to embark on trying a r134 Mach 2, if that does not provide the improvements I am after then I will try using an aluminium shim isnted of the copper one I have now.

If that does not work - this will be up for grabs at £500 for all you water/air guys.

Shigsy has first dibs - the queue starts here lol :)

Took your advice me old pal and used the black CPU sponge (as supplied with the CPU) to ensure that I could hold it in place. Started to slice slowly around the unit starting at the corners then as I cut deeper I angled the blade (pointing toward the IHS) so as to avoid any contct with the surface mounted components.

:)

On a slightly OT note, have you tried a BIOS with a RAM multiplier (not divider) option? Its the HTT frequency, not the RAM frequency that "causes" coldbug, so the HTT can be kept low, but the RAM multiplied to get decent numbers :)

Removed the Ihs off my Opteron 146 and my temps were terrible and i was right, Dropped my temps by 10*c load:D

Before you ask, Yes one of the Ic's are missing and cpu is working flawlessly, if not better.

I think it got knocked off when i dropped the cpu without the ihs on the floor:$
