Reference or Non-Reference for SLI?

Which is better? I'm choosing between two 670's at 1440p, and I can get the 670 FTW or the Asus DCII 670.. both are the same price. They both will have a slot of space between them, and I plan to get a backplate for the FTW.. so which one would have lower temps? I have a 600T with a window just to let people know. Thanks!

Reference/blowers is the preferred choice for SLi normally. With SLi, heat becomes much more of an issue than with single cards and getting heat out of your case and away from the cards is the priority. Hence blowers which exit the heat out side the back of your case are the goto option normally. Reference cards normally tend to be blowers and are also normally the easiest cards to get waterblocks for when the time comes to really sort out the cooling on them.

So for the best temps in your case I'd recommend avoiding the Asus DCII 670 and go with the EVGA 670 FTW (so long as it's the blower variant and not the dual fan one that they also made).

Only downside with blowers is that they eventually become noisy, especially in SLI where one card will run 8c or so hotter by default.

If your case has good cooling and you can feed the cards plenty of air I would go with a custom dual slot cooler. Mostly because it has a larger finned area with more cooling capacity.

Something like the MSI Power Edition cards providing your case works well (IE intake and getting air out)

Well I can have an airconditioner blowing straight into my case if you want.. and I prefer EVGA and its looks over the Asus.. I might get EVGA for its support too. What do you guys think?

Great way to get damp on your components. Keep computers away from air conditioners I wrecked a slot machine doing that.

Also check out the FTW SIG2.

Same 680 PCB IIRC but better cooler.

If you don't mind a bit of extra noise, go reference. Their design will push the warm air out the back of the case while cards like the Asus ones will spread it through the whole case and continue to try and cool themselves with the warm air.

another avenue to consider is in the future of water-cooling. reference boards are
easier to purchase water blocks than specialty cards. although some designers do
also make specialty blocks, but there are more reference blocks than specialty blocks.

most say "nawww, no water-cooling for me.." usually end up being bitten by the
h2o bug and rue the day they purchased that specific card.. so re-buying, blocking
and selling the existing card gets really expensive. SLI/CFX hurts twice as much!

So say I had two 670 DCII's from Asus, and two 670 FTW's, the FTW's would cool better with lower temps right? Otherwise I could get two 670 DCII's and even though they have higher temps I could still match the two EVGA's due to the higher cooling capacity of the DCII.. understand what I'm saying? Or am I blabbering too much hahaha.

No I don't think the FTWs would cool better given they use a stock 680 cooler and the Asus cards use a custom cooler.

You would need much better case cooling for the Asus cards to shine, though.

The only thing the FTWs have going for them is that they can dump most of the heat outside the case. They ought to be cheaper too.

Well, I don't have any side panel cooling for my 600T because I have the window variant, so I should probably get two 670 FTW's. I've heard they are very quiet, I don't really mind them going to 80 degrees as long as they are operating above 1 GHZ..

but you don`t need side panel cooling .you have the 600T not a basic 50$ case.its fine.go with the asus ones.better in both noise and temps.and for 1440p gaming you might want to have more vram...just a suggestion
