I need a UPS as the power around here is annoying to say the least and i worry about my pride and joy getting damaged by it :)

power supply i have (or rather will have) is 850w if that matters! maximum power usage by my pc is probably around 500w if that matters too

We've always supplied APC, tend to stay away from belkin. Had a fair few issues with them.

Don't forget to figure in you monitor.

What are the key specs to look for in a UPS?

Hmm interesting topic.

To add a bit to the last question of snafu: what does VAC mean? I understood it was the capacity of the UPS, but finding out on how to convert it to an actually usable unit is hard. Some people say VAC=watt? In that case I'd need a bigass UPS for my 500w rig + 150w screens + 120w amplifier :/

Thanks. I think it is important to buy one from a reputable manufacturer but for folks to also understand how the unit's specifications translate into their intended use.

Not to hijack your thread but I need to get one as well since I live in the country where power-outs are common on very stormy days. So I am interested in reading what people recommend to you. As well as any information on what the specifications mean so I can pick out a unit that will work for me.

I have four rigs running so I need to either buy four smaller untis or one big one (depending on costs and specs).

Cheers

APC - for the wins

The best option would be an APC, because it's more compatible with windows, even Windows XP has generic drivers, only for APC UPSses. The APC units can be controlled via the pc, either a USB / serial port, it'll be the best option. APC for the wins...

VAC = AC Voltage i'd expect.

BTW why on earth would you want your amplifier connected to a UPS? Most will only last ~10 minutes on power outage which gives you enough time to shut down your PC safely and save your work.

Prob the filtered power, cant see the battery being useful for it.

Yup, the filtered power.

And because I do not want to disturb the delicate ... chaos of cables I have below my desk :p
