Rather odd problem

Right guys, I have yet another gremlin in my rig...

The other day I couldnt get any output on my Medusa microphone no matter what settings I used (this, added to the 10 other things wrong with then pushed me to RMA them). So I thought I better test the line-in (white stereo socket?) on my X-Fi XM by plugging my MP3 player into it. After tweeking the windows audio panel I got it to play back through my speakers fine, and over TS (lol ;) ) So I ruled out my sound card being at fault.

Then I figured I would try a cheapo mic I had downstairs, didnt work at all, so i wrote this one off as dead too. Then today I thought I would give it one last try and installed my onboard sound drivers. To my confusion, the dead mic actually works through my onboard.

So basically, this mic works, my line in / mic socket works, but when i plug the mic into the white socket it doesnt work..... with the same settings as with the working MP3 player or otherwise.....um?

This is justa wild guess, but there wil be a voltage coming from your mp3 player, about 1.2v maybe this is what is needed to power the line in, the big microphones at school we use, you need to power the, so maybe there is no volatge coming out of the "line in" so maybe you need to make sure that it is the headphone as well.

Dont know if thsi is right, just a guess, becuase i dont know whether a samll microphone needs a voltage and current to work.

Hope this helps.

Yea you're partially right mate, Line-In doesnt provide amplification afaik so the fairly powerful output of my MP3 player would be ok being put straight through, but setting it to Mic should add some amplification, where as in this case it stops any input / output at all. A microphone works by inducing current however, and so should at least trip any voice activation settings, even if the output is too quiet for me to hear.

Thanks for the reply though dude
