random freezing!

Hi

I have had my Asus p8z77-v motherboard RMA'd because of freezing. So i have a nice new shiny one. When I installed it into the computer and ran stress tests for over 10 hours everything was fine.

Then one day i heard some electrical whine/buzz noise, from the motherboard, the computer froze and i had to manually restart the machine.

The electrical noise sounds every other day but now is not as noticeable, however the computer freezes every few days.

When it froze the first few times, everything will slow down and then it would stop, music would stutter etc. then i would have to manually restart.

Now it will freeze for about 15 seconds then un freeze for 15 secs and then freeze again until i manually restart.

I then noticed that the fans in my computer now seem to be at a higher rpm, and sometimes cant hold the same rpm. The fans are sometimes even making a noise as if the bearings are going. I think its the cpu cooler fan but not too sure.

The freezing occured again yesterday and Asus AI suite probe shows a red warning +3.3v, i then check the recording and found it had some abnormalities. Also the mouse seemed to look funny etc. Also when i clicked shut down (im sure i did) the computer turned off...sort of...the screen when off i heard the HDDs turn off but the fans motherboard gpu were still on as shown in the picture this has only happened once and hasnt happened again so i may have pressed the wrong button.

Temps and volts seemed to be ok when i used to check them. But upon checking this yesterday, all does not seem well.

Now i need to know if it is the motherboard because if it is, amazon do not have any in stock and I only deal with amazon. If i have to return this i will have a i5-3330 that i will need to shift then possible move onto 1150, but as with a lot of people and me being a student, i dont really have money to sort this problem out. The shit thing is I need it because its the only computer i have and i have lots of essays to write!

I have attached all the pics I have when the freezing occured yesterday at about 1.40am which is when the +3.3v 0.000v error is shown.

Any help will be really helpful please guys im stressing over my masters work and now this shit! i barely have time as it is

1. Asus monitoring hates everything around itself, so any kind of monitoring program (CPUID HWMonitor, MSI Afterburner, etc.) will make it go crazy, in your case its volts, in mine its temps...

2. photo_3.jpg (4 of 9) shows ur pc could use some cleaning, dust is potentially electrically conductive -> stuff may happen (remember to hold fans with hand to prevent spinning)

3. make sure the fans are easily spinning and not causing any problems

4. electrical noise may also come from Power Supply Unit (?)

5. quick memtest (start -> search -> mdsched) (?)

random freezes are the worst...

I think it might be your gpu causing the freezing problem. I have a 560ti myself and I found out that nvidia has driver problems when it comes to the 460/560 cards. Check event viewer for any recent errors.

You say the Asus software told you the +3.3v was bad? Thats the 3.3v rail on the PSU. PSU may be the cause of all this.

With regards to dust the dust on the intake is always like that but the computer was gutted and cleaned maybe a couple weeks before this.

I will do a mem test now but got a feeling its definately MB, PSU or GPU

If it is the power supply i have a few years warranty left on it so thats not too bad but ill have to get a spare if it is that. will get the voltmeter out tomorrow and check the +3.3v rail

good shout, there has been a few nVidia updates...will check other stuff tho process of elimination LONNNNGGG

yeah maybe, i i will check it with a voltmeter...

mem test revealed no errors, so voltmeter test and then use the onboard gpu...funnily enough the computer hasnt frozen since the last time it froze :S

ok just an update on this freezing bollucks. I have not been able to locate my dads voltmeter ill have another look for it today. But my computer literally just froze again but this time the screen stopped and then went white. I was listening to music via itunes and had 3 tabs open on chrome :S i took a quick video which i will post and i have a screen shot of event viewer please help!

this is the video of the crash. if you turn up your speakers u can hear what it does the sound and how the sound changes after a while and also the screenshot of the event viewer.

unfortunately I dont have one because this is my first custom comp. and the other one is a dell psu

Try unplugging your gpu and put the cable into the motherboard. See if it works?

will do, the video i posted showed a white screen, thats the first time thats happened usually its just on the normal screen. A friend suggested a problem with the USB bus???? i have a 1tb hdd portable always plugged into the computer via USB 3.0 port.

Would unplug it to see if that cures the problem but i doubt that is the case. Could also be a bad cable but then again thats rare as well.

What I get are sudden freezes, then no sound but static though my speakers. Even worse when i have my headset on.

I do a hard reset then everything is fine after.

thats my problem too its a power management issue on the motherboard because i found out its something to do with USB, i dont know exactly what but when i had nothing plugged in via usb it was fine.

Ok so i tested my PSU 3V and it was fine, i looked at event viewer and noticed something about the motherboard bus. I have an external usb 3.0 WD 1tb drive connected at all times, when i removed it, i didnt notice freezing. But either way I have RMA'd the board for a full refund. I have just purchased the Asus p8z77-LK which was cheaper etc I will see how that goes really.

Also i managed to record the electrical noise i was getting, please excuse my dad's coughing etc (he was trying to sleep!) you will hear the electrical noise and then the fans turn up. and i had nothing running on the system at that time.
