Ive already done some google work and i havent found an answer that is "yes" or "no" so here i am.

If one drive dies in a Raid 1 array can the other drive be used as if its a single drive to copy the data off onto a differnt drive in the machine/in a different machine, or do you have to add another drive and repair it or what not before you can rescue the data??

No, you wouldnt need to rebuild the array. You could copy the data off of a single drive.

Awsome, time to raid these 250gb drives i was planning to use in raid 0 for my steam games as one of my servers drives was clicking earlyer when i made it lock up, tho that may have been because of the 5 vmwares open using 8 of 8gb ram not the drive starting to die... better safe than sorry tho.

I have used 1 drive from a RAID 1 set in another machine and rebuilt the array in the 2nd machine, however to do this you will need the same model of RAID controller in the 2nd machine. This methodology worked on some HP &Dell servers I have worked with, not sure if the same process would would work on on board Dektop RAID.

kk, im not fussed about rebuilding all that much i just need to know the data is safe if a drive decides to die as by that point i hopefuly would have dropped the money into a mid range raid card + 10/14 drives, its just a short term fix to worrying about loesing several databases from game servers i run on the machine as ive already lost one once transfering data to that machine when i built and it was a pita to get it all sorted

, up first is another 8gb ram tho

As Blah said your data will be safe if 1 drive fails, I would still backup any DBs to something else though incase the RAID card dies.

Yeah, planning to back it up once a week to an external drive or something as there a few gig a pop i dont realy wana be doing it every day, mainly just wana minimise down time if something goes pop for the moment, most of the stuff on the raid card will be music/video backups that are currently taking up 1.4-1.5ish tb on my main machine (would be more but i have mabey 50gb total left out of my 2tb
