Raid 0 SSDNow V+100 Drive 128GB

Hey all,

I'm thinking about a raid 0: 2x SSDNow V+100 Drive 128GB set up for windows and programs like avid and pro tools.

What are your thoughts? :]

it'll be okay - just makes sure you have a large storage (HDD) drive for your loops, data and for backing up. do back-ups regulary

i suggest getting a minimum of a 2TB HDD. split this into two partitions... one to match the total array of the raid (256gb), and the other the remaining space.

that way, you could just clone the raid data to the one partition on the HDD for your back-ups

When it comes to performance is the SSDNow V+100 still one of the faster ones or are there better options?

I've been looking on the forum, but most posts I could find are a few months old.

The more I read about SSDs, the less convinced I am having them in raid 0 is a good idea. What do you think?

I think they are so dang fast anyway you dont really need to raid 0, not sure you would see any real world difference. I would instead of buying 2 smaller ones, combine the moolah and get the largest one you can. The larger capacity the faster they tend to read/write (not always). Less risk of a failure, more memory to work with, (raid takes some memory). But the v+100 are good, as long as you give the computer some idle time to do its janitor thing on the drives.

Lets say I don't go with a raid 0 set up. Which would you go with:

Kingston SSDNow V+100,

Corsair Performance 3,

OCZ Vertex 3,

or a Crucial SSD?

Honestly, my thrifty nature, Id probably go with the least expensive 256gb I could find. Which after a quick search, would probably be the Kingston V+ series. Also, going back to my thriftyness, I would opt for a sata II ssd, instead of sata III. The consensus is that it would take 2 or 3 ssd drives in raid 0 to bottleneck the sata II throughput. But someone might tell you otherwise, it all goes back to i'm a cheap skate lol.

Well i'm sure the Two smaller drives would beat the single, but it would take synthetic benchmarks to tell. In real life usage, I highly doubt you will be able to tell the difference. Maybe if you do heavy file reads and writes, but then again, thats what the bigger drives are for...the big files. Don't let me talk you out of raid, I would just prefer more space on an ssd. Just my opinion

You wont get the advertised Capacity on your drive, you will get less. Throw in the RAID and you'll get even less. SSD capacity is precious lol

At this point I don't think I'll go with a raid set up. I'm looking for the fastest 256GB SSD. Since this a somewhat pricy investment I'd just like to make sure I get what I'm looking for :]

Good idea. I would also do a little reading if your not convinced on the sata II or sata III aspect. Sometimes its best to read things yourself, that why you can't say i'll never listen to that one guy on the forums ever again! lol
