Hi,

I'm away to start building my new rig and before splashing the cash on something thats going to be a waste of time/money, can people with the above combo post some results of any oc'ing? Its crunch time for me whether to go for QX9650/790i(U)/DDR3/GX2 or the tried and tested Q6600/DDR2, again with a GX2. Reason i'm asking as there does not seem to be any decent results with the 1st...yet....

Cheers.

Well, Kingpin used the first rig you mentioned to get (pretty much) 30k in 3DM06. I'm not sure how much the 790i chipset helps though. I think the new intel chipsets match for performance at least and are probably morestable and better OCers if its any thing to go by.

As for which CPU - Persoanlly, i'd get a Q6600 for now, then upgrade it when the next set up CPU's come out. Just get a mobo that supports 45nm and 1600 FSB, you can also get mobo's that support both DDR3 and DDR2, that may be worth looking into.

A good watercooling set-up would be worth buying with the money left from not getting the QX9650, or perhaps even a phase-change unit....*drools*

Its essenitally like a waterooling system except with a liquid that is around -50 degrees...

"Refrigeration Cooling 101

A phase change cooling system like the Prometeia Mach II GT essentially works like this: the compressor pressurizes a gaseous refrigerant into liquid form, which causes it to rise in temperature. The liquid refrigerant is sent to the condenser (a heat exchanger) where it is cooled down.

The liquid refrigerant is then forced at high pressure through copper capillary tubing into an evaporation chamber, which is a low pressure area. There it evaporates (changes from from liquid to gas) back into gaseous form and absorbs latent heat in an endothermic reaction. The now heated gas is then pumped back into the compressor to be turned into a liquid before proceeding to the condenser again to dump its heat."

For the amount of cooling they give you (minus figures, even on extreme overclocks, they are worth the money (around twice the price of a zlaman reserator.

I plan to get one as soon as I finish university and get a job.

But yeah, they're awesome.

Its just for the CPU, yeah. You can add a small WC loop in if you would like, but its not essenital as most chipsets will run quite happily at max voltage. So WC or after market cooling will give good results, it just won't be essential, but obviously if you're getting phase change then its going to be beneficial to have everything runny extremely cool to ensure that your system has maximum overclockability and system stability.

Pound for pound its easily the best cooling.

Just had a look on the net about it. Seems pretty cool like! Bit ott for what i'll be aiming for though!

Back on track, anyone had good results using a 790i ultra with qx9650/gx2 for oc?
