Hi y'all

Just thought I'd post some details of a system I've been thinking about/talking to Dave and Jim about:

Shuttle SB-86i Barebones:

See it Here

Spec:

See it here

Dave's Leadtek (I think) 6200 :D

Ebuyer PC 3200 1gb RAM

Samsung Spinpoint 8mb cache 120gb

See it here

Samsung 552B Black DVD-RW

See it Here

The HDD and DVD are not definate - just the ones I chose @ Kustom...

Not sure if the Shuttle has sound - but I have a spare PCI 5.1 card so its no probs

Monitor - will use mine for the moment - its has DVI-D-Sub switching capability

Keyboard + Mouse - get a bundle as/when

So get all that and eventually upgrade the RAM and maybe PSU...we'll see

I want a quiet system that I can fold/play some games on (just some mind - I will still have the gaming rig), surf and burn CD's/DVD's and stuff.

Also maybe look to get a TV tuner card somewhen :D

Another monitor will be added later on as well - maybe identical to mine as its getting cheaper :D

Pricing:

Shuttle: £200

CPU: £150ish

RAM: £34

DVD-RW: £35ish

HDD: £45ish

Then later upgrades: GEIL Value Performance: £66ish

Monitor: £150ish

Keyboard + Mouse combo: £30ish

Looks good mate. What kind of cooling can u get in those things?

it just seems a bit of a waste having that 630 in there and not being able to overclock it if the cooling is naff.

Well I'll have to install it and see - not sure about cooling tbh - I want it quiet and shuttle BIOS's are not known for overclocking anyway :(

Ah yeah - getting Win X64 Pro too :D - thats why I'm getting a 6XX series :D

Oh yeah - the main reason for this project is to have a nice quiet PC I can play wityh and not make a massive racket ;)

EDIT: And I'll be putting a 120mm coolermaster (quiet) fan on the back using an adaptor - should cool it a little better :D

Ive thought about building a system such as this just 4 peace of mind in case something tragic happens to my main rig. Always nice to have a powerful non tweaked backup that u know wont shit on u 4 n6 reason at all. I say go for it matt!

Nice one mate. I'm still a little hesitant about the cooling side of things in that case. Imho they are only designed for htpc, also is the psu up to it?

nice system there kemp, I am building a shuttle also this month.

Using the SB83G5M Chassis:

P4 530

Geil 512mb

MCE 2005

160GB seagate sata

LG DVD burner

8 in 1 floppy

Hauppauge PVR-500MCE

PN15g wireless module

Lookin foward to buildin it

Well its basically going to be for a HTPC and I'm assuming Inbtel has its own version of "cool n'quiet" so that will be enabled. Its not for anything stressfull - just a bit of folding and surfing and generally quiet computing. Basically I won't strain it too much - but I want a small quiet PC and this one fits maaa bill purrfect :D

gonna be a nice setup tere mate.....nice tv card...is that the one with dual encoding?

talking about cooling, i dont know if this is how your case is designed, but in a lot of barebones systems, the case is made of metal, and a hs is welded to the case underneith the cpu slot and nb(in the case of the board and case being matched). my brother built a shuttle system that used this umm, unusual method of cooling, and funnily enough it did help to keep temps down, i suppose the idea is that the whole case becomes a giant h/s

Sweet so ur case can double as Betty Crocker's test lab! :D

yeah dual encoding, but im not crazy about it. I replaced it with an ATi TV Elite in my main rig cause it bluescreened my comp, but I think it was my GTX drivers. Hopefully ;)
