Hi everyone,
Wanted to take a moment to share more detail around our NSFW rules and how they are enforced on Imgur.

We’ve always had “No NSFW rules”
We’ve always had NSFW content rules on Imgur, we just didn’t make them visible enough and didn’t have the resources to enforce them properly until recently. Ultimately, it is the Imgurian community that flags inappropriate content to us, and we just haven’t previously had the resources to address these requests. The Imgur community is self-policing: if several Imgurians flag a comment as NSFW, then it’s flagged to the Imgur team for assessment. If it violates the content rules, it is then taken down and notice is given. We never select content for takedown, it must be flagged by several Imgurians first.

What’s changed
In the past, when we responded to Imgurian takedown requests, it was generally in the form of shadow bans and complete removal. That didn’t feel very transparent and was a terrible experience for the person who had their content removed with no notification. Now we have a team devoted to responding to user reports and answering questions, so you’ll see the rules being enforced more than we have in the past. We’ve made it easier for people to report posts that break the community rules and have better tools for quickly addressing those reports. When a comment is removed, you’ll see a little blurb about why. The poster will also receive multiple warnings before a ban is ever placed on the account, except in extreme cases.

What’s not changing
We will not allow Imgur to turn into a G-rated shell of itself, nor is this meant to bring down a ban hammer on our most active users. User reports are reviewed by a human so we can pick out frivolous reports or disagree with the report. Imgur does not actively search for and remove any content without a user report. We value open speech and self-expression incredibly highly, and the sometimes crass humor, ridiculous puns, and don’t-take-ourselves-too-seriously attitudes make Imgur what it is, and we love this community. There is a place for dickbutt and fine art and weird GIFs and information here.
But we also won’t allow content that directly harms other people or makes groups feel alienated. Imgur should be a place where everyone can contribute.
We’re always, always listening to the community here and always iterating on what we’ve already done. The entire Imgur team will continue to listen and you can always
contact us directly.
