Question about cpu swap

I have a i3-2120 cpu in a Oem mb w/ H67 chipset and 1155 socket. 65 watts. Can I replace this cpu w/ i7-2600s ? Same wattage.

Good question. OEM motherboards can sometimes be picky. I'd check if the system it came from had a higher-end CPU option. If it did it would probably work.

Well, it has the same generation cpu now. 2nd generation. same wattage 65 w. same chipset H-67. same socket 1155.

Yup but logic doesn't always = logical.

It needs to be coded into the BIOS to work. If it's not? It won't, no matter how everything you think should make it work.

Did they go in and add the microcode for a gen older CPU? Don't expect it based on logic. One line of code can make it work or not.

It's the same with most Xeons. They fit, they use the same arch, they rarely work. That's down to the OEM to add and nothing more.

Ok. thanks for the quick response. I'm gonna try it. i've seen other folks do the same swap and it seems to have worked. thanks.
