Quad Core or Dual

SATA2 is 300gbps. SATA is 150gbps.

Bearing in mind the quads clock well also, id still recomend getting one while you've got the cash. You'll then be futureproofed for a fair time. Theres a Q6400 about/on the near horizon.

Watercooling would be sufficent for it enless you want to break records. Pump, Block & Dual Rad filled via a t-line would be a cheap, effective & expandable start.

You can't just go buying any old phase unit for quads. They are currently in the process of killing off a fair few vaop & mach units due to them simply not being tuned for that higher load. And custom built units/the cost to mod retails are heavy.

I believe that SATA2 isn't a standard, it's just a madeup term. THe correct term is SATA 3.0 GB/S not SATA2 I think... and isn't it 1.5gb/s v 3.0gb/s?

argh now im getting frustrated... thsi is why i havent bought a new pc since socket 754 and wasnt going to till that rig died on me which it did... so frustrating to choose... i know all are good choices but i still want to make the apparently right choice.. im not getting 4 74gb... i at most will get two of the 74 or 2 150.... but not so much for space... but let me look at price... if 4 74 is better price than 2 150 maybe illl do that... i know tat 74gb is not enough as vanguard alone is 20gb... add in star wars battlefront ii, hl2, css, and whatever other games i get now that i have a fast and stable pc... soemthing my amd rig wasnt....

i was just saying 4 - 74g b/c 2 - 150, would be near the same amount of space not in performance. 74 raptor > than 150 raptor, other than space, and clear panel to see the disks spin. i aint gonna lie it does look cool.

Hey, if you put drives in raid0 (fastest performance, but no redundency) you essentially combine the two drives into one - 2 74gb raptors become one turbo fast 148gb drive.

What people are saying about the regular drives such as the deskstar is, in raid0, they will outstrip a single raptor (but raptors in raid0 beat all). Performance/price just stick two sata2 drives in raid0.

There is a thread on here somewhere for hdtach scores, there you can see Frags raptors in raid vs other drives in raid and singular drives too.

As for c2d vs quad - in a month and a half e6600, e6700 will have the prices slashed. The Q6600 (quad) drops $300 at the same time.

Trooper on with what you have until the end of March/early April and reap the benefits of the price cuts.

Water cooling would probably take you about as far as you would want to go. Conroe cores are pretty cool (literally). Like Ham said, an Apogee, Laing DDC+petras top with a T line + triple radiator would serve you well.

im "trooping" on two emachines... a amd 64 mobile lappy that i slapped the 3400+ from my dead rig in that has 512megs of ram... and a 2.6 ghz celeron desktop with 256mb ram.. and remember the 128kb L2 cache.. its horrible... problem is that the lappy doesn't handle vanguard saga of heroes well.. and i had to indian give this laptop back from a friend when my rig died.... I may not be able to wait... so your saying that in march the quad will go down 300$??? can you guarantee me this.. and give me the approximate week???? i have some other things i can do with the money like pay my credit cards off and get ahead on my car payments... which is what i should be doing :) just give me the word.. i trust you guys with my livelihood... although this pc does lag behind when im viewing the pr0n

edit: and curiously.. when can a price drop be expected for the nvidia 8xxx cards

Take a look here my friend :)

I beleive this bit should interest you...

One of the most noticeable cut, Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2.40 GHz/4MB L2 x 2/1066MHz FSB), which is going to launch on Jan 7 2007, is planned to be cut from $851 to $530, a 37.7% off. Meanwhile, Core 2 Duo E6700 (2.66 GHz/4MB L2/1066MHz FSB) and E6600 (2.4 GHz/4MB L2/1066MHz FSB) is planned to cut from $530 and $316 to $316 and $224 respectively, a 40.3% and a 29.1% off.

I can't find it at the moment but a source I read said the 27th April? End of March April.

Why waste money? As for the 8800gtx cut's - r600 drops in April, at pretty much the exact same time nvidia are due to drop the 45nm 8900's so the 8800gtx will more than likely reduce in price at that point.

It's all about April!

i found that article before you posted it but thanks..

april 22nd... well what about these 8900s... if they are 45nm they will run cooler right? if so I want those... will they go to the approximate price of the 8800gtx msrp.. ive all but decided to wait until april to build my rig...

edit: forget an 8900... unless its better performing... if so.. do you have a date for r600 release

usually larger the model name, the higher it preforms. ex 6600 < 6800 < 7800 GT < 7800 GTX > 7900 GT.... 8900 will be better than the 8800. and im more than sure the R600 will be better than the 8800 GTX and proboly better or near par to the 8900 when or if they release it.
