Q6700 (Kentsfield) Overclocking

I know this is old tech by the forums standard, but these processors still have some life in them.

I'm running a Q6700 at 3.5Ghz with 1.424 Volts but I'm just wondering if this is ok as a 24/7 overclock.

It's behaving itself in everything but Prime where it's giving me incorrect answers and stopping individual workers (usually dumps a pair and maintains the other pair)

The MSI board i'm running (P35 Platinum) supports the overclock ok but I'm getting massive VDroop with apparently no way in which to compensate. It varies between 1.44 Volts and 1.38 Volts in HW Monitor. Is there another board for 775 Tech that supports VDroop compensation? Is it likely that my PSU is causing the Issue? (it's a temporary Hiper Unit)

All Suggestions welcome - I know this chip could hit 3.6+ without any problems and I'm not hitting temperature issues idle temp@24C stress temp max@49C

Cheers

Lee

The q6700 is one of the older 65nm 775 chips if i remember right so you still have a little more headroom with the voltages, try bumping the voltage up to 1.45v for a first step and see if that helps

Also im pretty sure that board has a vdroop adjustment setting, my p35 Asus p5k premium had a reasonable one, cant for the life of me remember what it was named in bios tho.

Cheers Mate,

I've bumped it to 1.5 in bios <eek> and it's showing 1.45 in hardware monitor. Still dropped a core in prime though (weird) temps have pushed 51 Degrees so the loops doing it's job ok.

Is that the P5K Premium that you mentioned was for sale, did you get rid of it then?? Shame that.

Problem solved.

Just blown the back out of a PSU which took a voltage reg on the motherboard out.

F@#k my luck.

Anyone reckon this is RMA'able.

In other news just put the processor and ram in another board and it's posted....................which was nice.

I still have the board actually as i havent got around to shifting any parts since i finished my upgrade in jan, do you have access to the for sale and wanted forum? if so i can put up a thread if your interested (ive lost track of what was required to get access to it as its changed a few times since ive been here).

I certainly do have access to the sale/wanted forum.

Just looking for a replacement power supply now. I knew Hiper had some issues but didn't expect it to let go quite so spectacularly, took the ring main with it when it went............YEAH Nice one Lee.

I had a hiper unit in my original p5k rig and its still going strong powering my server at like 5 years old, its out lasted the OCZ unit that i swaped to when i was running dual 4850 for a time, solid volts still unlike the OCZ unit that ended up only putting out around 8v on the 12v rail for like 12-18 months before i got this ax850 in jan.

If your interested in the p5k prem just let me know and ill grab the required pics and start a thread up.
