PSU types>?

Hi sorry in advance I know this is a noob question, but....

I'm thinking of replacing my PSU which is by far the loudest thing in my computer.

The one I currently have came with the case and whats confusing me is the fan seems to be in a different place to any replacement psus I can find.

The available PSUs seem all to have a fan on the top/bottom of the unit whereas, the fan in my current psu is situated on the front, near where the input power cable is.

Does this mean I should stick with that type (if I can find them)?

I think if I were to put what seems to to be the "standard" psu in my case the fan would either blow into the case toward the heatsink over my cpu, or if I couldn't fit it that way round toward the inner case wall where the airflow would be reduced.

Sorry again I know this is a dumb question but hey ho, got to start somewhere.

Corsair AX FTW

no your not limited to that type of psu. You can run the more conventional style psus in just about any case. if you have mesh under your psu you can run it up or down if not then your forced to run it the TTL way (mine as well) fan up. and i third the Corsair AX range

:/ seriously I've been saying this for along time f_ck the AX range.. get the HX/TX/BUILDER depending on what you need don't waste your money on 80+ Gold just make sure it's at least Bronze or Silver

no need to be rude mate the AX is just a better psu overall most like the FULLY modular aspect of it as well as the hybrid fan control it sports. The entire range of Corsair psu's are top notch. And the 80+ Gold is worth the peace of mind for most.

So what would I be missing out on if I went for the Novatech one?

From what I understand (which is admittedly little) the bronze, silver and gold etc represent additional efficiency, of between 2%-10%.

Is this really I bag deal for general use? (I know this is an overclockers forum, but I don't really overclock that much)

What's your exact budget for the PSU? If we know this we can suggest some top notch PSU's for you within a specific price bracket

at a squeeze £55 - £60 (but preferably 45-50) , my system currently runs fine off 500w.

I value quietness over everything else (although I'm not sure what other considerations there really are with a psu)

You can get a semi modular Be Quiet Pure Power 530W for £60 at Aria. An FSP Aurum 500W 80Plus Gold Rated unit is £62. Also found a Corsair CX500 V2 for £45.

At Dabs.com they're selling an XFX Core Edition 450W for £40 and 550W for £48. They're also selling a Corsair GS500 for £55.

Please note all of the Units i've listed are non-modular EXCEPT the be quiet unit which is semi-modular which helps a lot with cable management. Also, the Corsair units listed have 80 Plus efficiency ratings, the XFX and the Be quiet have 80 Plus Bronze, and the FSP has an 80 Plus Gold rated efficiency. Out of the ones listed i'd personally be most interested in the Be Quiet or the FSP

Thanks for your feedback, I really appreciate it and I hope I don't seem argumentative...

So what are the potential consequences of a PSU "being crap"?

If it fails it could potentially kill all of your components, but that is a worse case scenario. Always buy a quality unit and you'll never have to worry about it failing
