Hi guys, I need a power supply for a server which will be housing a opteron 180, 4GB mem & 8 sata hard disks. How much wattage do you think I would need? The server will be on 24/7 so I want something thats stable (obviously), not rediculously loud & efficient. It won't be overclocked.

Thanks :)

850w SSI PCP&P mate, specifically built with servers in mind, coz you will only be pulling around 570w of power, the fans will runs normal instead of turbo too ;)

Ok thanks Mav - Couldn't get away with a 510W unit? better be safe than sorry I guess. Or maybe one of thos FSP 700W jobbies?

I'd have to agree, thats some serious server hardware - dont want it getting burnt out by something cheap! I think he might get away with 510, but its a push - if you were spending that much on a 510, then the 850 isnt that much more and makes a good investment.

Well its nearly twice as much, lol. But I do agree that I don't want it getting burnt out.

Plus last time I checked, the 510 isnt a server power supply - its a high performance one, have a look at PCP&C's website, they sell both.

the 700 watt fps will be far more for u and more.

i run my fx60 3.1 ghz 24/7

file server here running 14 hard drives with a tagan 480W PSU. Clamp meter shows its drawing max of 300W

A efficent PSU is the name of the game if its on 24/7 ;) FSP make good reliable efficient PSUs. Personally I think 500w would be suffiecent.

What will it be doing? Will it be under constant load? Is it a file server?

Yes it will mainly be a file server, print server feeding 4 PCs - two of those are media PCs.

Then a) it seems over powered for a file and print server and b) a 500w will be more than sufficient.

I would say look for an efficient PSU
