PSU recommendation

Permafrost

Compo Whore
hi guys as some of you know i'm downsizing my pc and going back to air.

i'm at the point where i know what case i'm going for but now i'm thinking of downsizing my psu from a 1000w to something more reasonable.

my specs are

i7 6700k
2x8gb corsair 3000hz
asus z270g m-atx ( it was cheaper then the z170 variant for some reason...)
msi gtx 1070 armor oc
samsung 960 evo 500gb
Noctua NH-L12 CPU Cooler
and about 4 120mm case fans corsair ML120 white leds
cablemods corsair cables (AXi,RM and HXi)

but my psu is a corsair HX1000i...

going by the corsair software i'm just about pulling 300w so even 550w will be enough for this pc.

so what would you do?

I suppose the RMi 550watt or the RMx would do fine in there.

personally, with the 10 year warranty on that psu and the fact it would do 24/7 passive mode with that little load on it, keep it in there, unless you looking to sell it.

With the prices of 550w psus as they are I would just keep what I had. You will be lucky to get £80 for your PSU (nobody wants to buy huge PSUs, I ended up taking £70 for an Enermax 1250w Revolution 87+) and then you will have to spend £70 on a half decent 550w.

Yeah, sod that noise.

You have a good point there dude, I have noticed that there are always ad's up for 850w+ PSUs but almost no interest.

As for the corsair RM 550x recommendations, I'll be looking for something like a corsair ax760i or an evga p2 650w. If only there was a corsair titanium 650w coming out soon...

I know 1000w seems like overkill but really, you won't save any power by going to a smaller unit. It's not like you use 400w and then 600w gets wasted, you simply don't use it.

I have a Corsair AX1200? or AX1000? that Tom very, very kindly gave to me and I won't be replacing it any time soon.

What irks me is that a couple of months back a decent 550w PSU was £50. Now they are starting to reach like £80. Probably because they are the most popular and retailers have noticed and gouged but it really sucks.

Some guy the other day with a Pentium Anni popped his PSU and nearly fainted when people started posting PSUs £80 and up.

Even a crappy Corsair thing is like £60+ (CX or whatever they are called).

Thanks guys, I'm going keep what I have.

I also have a cablemods 20% off code that came with my mobo if on this thread what's it.

Technically higher in their range but they are all much older. Damn site noisier too.

AXi is long overdue an update to at very least the RMi/HXi fans to make them quiet.

i had a AX760 and that wasn't noisy at all.

yeah an update with a 550w or a 650w versions would be nice ar cpu's and gpu's are using less and less power. the only high end psu's in the 550w/650w range are superflower/evga...

I took the AX860i out of Orca because it was so loud at start up. The PSU you have is orders of magnitude quieter

All AXi's bar the 1500i are technically a bit out of date when compared to the rest of their PSU's.

AXi's are due an update.....

TBH I think youd be wasting your money again if you changed and its not going to 'get' you anywhere

never had my hands on a axi760/860/1200/1500 so i wouldn't know.

i'm not changing my psu after reading what people are saying, only thing i am changing is the case and that's that.

I've got an EVGA G2 650w by Seasonic, and it's utterly silent even at load. Love it. But why lose so much money on your current PSU and then spend more on a lesser powered one?
