Here is what I plan to have for this project:

Asus Sabertooth Z77 -> X79

Intel Core i7 3960X

Corsair Dominator DDR3 1866 32Gb

Corsair SSD Force Series GT 240Gb

Corsair AX1200 Gold PSU

Asus GTX680-DC2T-1GD5

Corsair Obsidian Series 550D Mid-tower case

Corsair Hydro Series H100

LiteOn BR/DVD Drive

Razer BlackWidow Ultimate

Razer Deathadder 3500

Eizo FlexScan SX2762W-BK 27" screen

I may get 3 SSD GT240Gb or 1 SSD GT240Gb + 1 OCZ RevoDrive Hybrid 1Tb, not decided yet.

Will keep you posted

A Z77 board won't work with a 2011 processor, dude

Also, stay away from OCZ, especially with such an expensive product such as the revodrive

Oh shit!!! really... so it means that if I stick with a Z77 I can only use 3770K at max?And I should swtitch to a X79 motherboard for the 3960X?

Good I came back to get feed back, I stayed out of the loop way too long to keep up

That power supply is WAY overkill. Get the i7 3930k instead of the 3960X because it will save you lots of $$. The 3960X is necessary. You will NEED an X79 motherboard for that CPU. Also, why the 550D, why not a better case? You may want the extra airflow of a higher end case. That is one kick-ass rig but you need to do some serious research beforehand. ESPECIALLY if you are spending that much money.

If you are purely gaming then you don't need X79 or that much RAM.

Yup, i'm afraid so. Z77 = LGA1155, X79 = 2011

Some other things: I can only imagine that this is going to be used to render videos or some complex images, because 32gb is a huge amount of RAM - I think i've had a laptop with a smaller hard drive than that once!

And, unless the work that you are going to be doing really does fully utilise the 3mb of L3 cache that the 3960X has over the 3930K, i'd say save yourself a few hundred pounds and go with the latter chip.

Also - components have become a lot more efficient lately, and you could easily run that rig on a 600w PSU - 1200w is WAAAAAY overkill

Beaten to the post xD

If the system is not for rendering, etc, then I would suggest the 2700k over the 3770k because it runs much cooler and be overclocked higher. If you don't actually NEED 32gb RAM, I would suggest 8gb to 16gb maximum, unless you were planning on creating a RAMdisk.

Thanks for all your inputs guys.

I am going to switch the board for the sabertooth x79. The shop proably didn't realize that either as i was also ordering other parts for my gaming rig...

This rig is not going to be my gaming rig but essentially my working rig for 3D rendering and some intensive particle tracking with huge data set. So i thought the 6 cores of the 3960 and 32Gb of Ram would do good as my current working station running with a xeon and 16Gb of Ram is kind of chocking!

The 3930K and 3960X are identical apart from the 3960X has 3MB more cache, that's it. So it's definitely not worth the extra £400 or so.

For the case I thought of bigger one but this one seems to be very quiet and I think I would rather go for a few Db down than a few C

And I've always been a fan of small enclosure....

Budget wise, I crancked everything up to max out the spec according the the money (not from my wallet) I got to setup the rig! I may even get a second GTX680

Well the dealer ran out of stock for the Asus GTX680-DC2O so instead I am going to get a Zotac GTX680 Amp edition.
I received some parts already and here is a quick look.
More to follow...

If you are rendering and particle tracking, will you not be better off with a quadro or tesla? Should be awesome, I always love seeing people cram loads of awesome hardware into a small chassis :P

Yeah I thought of a quadro 4000 but price was almost double... and tesla 4 to 5 times more than the GTX680... but I may switch to the quadro 4000 later if the GTX680 is not performing good enough.

Just received the mobo and the cpu.. Sabertooth X79 and i7-3960X

True, but the two CPU's are essentially the same. It's his money so he can do whatever. Anyway I look forward to seeing more :D
For my personal rig I would have gone for the 3930K, but for work we decided to get the fastest CPU. Even if the 3960X is just 3-5% faster, any gain in speed will be appreciable to analyze our data.
Not sure i will really "enjoy" this rig, but I do plan to test a few games quickly ;)
