Project P182 Watercooled V2!

Really like where you are going with this :D.

May I ask something about the Dremel as I probably will be using one when I start work on my project. 1. The thickness of aluminium it is designed to cut

2. The Sizes it comes in ( well the circular blade )

Again nice work !

Thanks for the comments guys :)

I've no idea about the thickness of material it's rated for! With the way a Dremel works you can probably cut through pretty thick stuff as you keep moving the Dremel over the cut till it goes through. The pressure from the weight of the Dremel is enough to cut through, so you don't have to really apply any downward force else it just wears the blades down faster.

But I will recommend getting the large re-enforced wheels for cutting as they last a lot longer.

Sidepanel Mutilation

It's been far too long since I did anything towards this project, so I made some time to work a little more on it.

windowcutoutmarked.jpg

As per my mockup (in my last picture update), I decided to go with this design for the case window, it looked alright drawn on, and so I decided to go with it.

sidepanelcutout.jpg

And here we have a nice cut out window :)

Test fitted on my current P180 (sorry didn't stop to take a pic), it works quite well I think.

This next bit was a pain in the backside, I had to separate the outer metal from the plastic inside of the sidepanel. It took forever, I cut myself a bunch of times, and I fear I've bent the outer layer a bit too much (it's still masked up on the other side, and I daren't look too see if I've sprained it >_> ). Hopefully it'll sit flat again when it's glued back to the plastic/window when it's all finished.

middlepanelcutout.jpg

I went to all that effort separating the panels so that I could get the jigsaw to the middle plastic (and inner metal layer) to cut this nice big square hole.

sidepanelcutoutback.jpg

Once re-assembled, it will look like this.

I've done this so I can recess the perspex for the case window as flush as possible with the outside of the case. If I'd have left it as it was and stuck the perspex on the inside of the sidepanel, there'd have been about a 4mm gap between the outside of the case and the window, which wouldn't have looked great. So this way, there's just the 1mm of the outside layer. (Fingers crossed it is worth the hassle).

blankingplate.jpg

I also made a blanking plate to cover all the stock holes in the mid-chamber divider in the P182. The hole in it is to let the water-pipes through, and I'm claiming it only looks that rough because of the plastic curling up (Granted it's not perfect underneath the plastic, but I'll probably be putting some trim on it anyway so it doesn't cut the pipes, in which case it doesn't matter :p ).

And this is where the blanking plate will live.

I actually think that's all my cuts done and dusted with now. :D

I've ordered some adhesive remover to get rid of the sticky stuff on the side panel (it's painfully slow to get off even with IPA and elbow-grease!). So when that gets here I'll clean it all up, and then I think I can arrange with Tom to get it all powdercoated ;)

Dan

try nail varnish remover. it needs to have acetol - think i spelt it right. Tis the thinner used for super glue.

yeah yeah :P

I've already started negotiations with Tom about powdercoating (/painting) so once that's done things will move pretty quickly.

Dan

Thought I aught to let you guys know where I'm at with this, in the way of what can only be described as a teaser picture:

baseplateassembled.jpg

Now I've hit a rather large speedbump in my plans, when I sent off my case bits to Tom for powdercoating, in my haste that day I forgot to pack these two bits:

blankingplatetestfit.jpg

So until I can find the time to post them back to Tom for more powdercoating I'm unable to re-assemble the case.

Good news is that I should be getting a core i7 rig in the next couple of weeks, so I can use this bad boy casemod with that hardware. Going to have to change out the PSU for a better one while I'm at it too. So much expense! :P

Dan

damn, how can you forget that! :p

Liking the placement of the stuff. It gets messy when wires are involved tho :(

i7 FTW! the economy needs a boost (its a great excuse to buy loads of expensive stuff)

I'm like a ninja when it comes to stealth routing cables, so I've got high hopes I'll be able to keep it all nice and tidy. :D

And I'm kicking myself for managing to forget to post it too!

Dan

yeah dan!!! wheres the updates :( been following this project for awhile now, still looks epic everytime i look at it

Well I'm currently half way through a 3 week roadtrip in America, so I didn't get on and send the parts back to tom to get powdercoated because I was half putting it off, and I was half preparing for the trip.

I get back on the 11th, and will need a few days to recover, but I am going to get this started again when I get back. :D

Dan

Aye what a nub for forgetting to send me the centre section, get it in the post asap dude Ive got a black run coming up!
