Project P182 Watercooled V2!

Looks like this is gonna be a very personal rig :).

Looks like I'm gonna have to go on ebay and get me one of them cards! I'll need to make sure I get the invoice though.
Yeah, this rig is very much a labour of love. :)

If you're patient enough, you might even be able to snag them sub £200. I'm just hoping the gamble of having an ex-mining card pays off!

So nice to see tools other than a screwdriver being used!
Thanks Tom! I dare say my temporary cardboard mod wouldn't have been quite the same if I'd have forgone using a knife and gaffer tape for just a screwdriver... but now I kind of want to try it. :p

I've seen some aftermarket ones for just over £200 actually, they have obviously been used as mining cards but most of them are from the US and I didn't really want to have to RMA to the US :(. I also read that companies (Powercolor that I've read) only offer the warranty to the original customer?

Really exited to see the build pan out. I'm doing a few mods on my case but nothing like this!

Look down the side on the ebay options, you have to change the "Item location" from "on ebay UK" to "UK only". You'll literally have to do this every time you go to ebay, but using this you can find the local items only.

There are XFX cards going too, and I know they allow you to transfer the warranty to a second person. MSI do the warranty based on a date code from the card, so I think I'll be ok from that.

jeez, just been back through this thread. Utterly mental amount of mods, tools and adaptations for your rig. All modders should read this as a bloody starting point lol

Aww SuB, I'm touched by such kind words. :D

You're welcome mate, it's refreshing to see someone really go at it and make a meal of doing something instead of skirting round the edges and taking the easy way.

I gotta get me a set of those hole drills as well that cut is divine.

Love it! Love all of it, your power to overcome the smallest of obstacles even to the point of making your own spanner :) I've used larger spanners in the past with a valve clearance shim wedged in to make up for the difference but never attacked one with a dremel.. Kudos to you Sir.

Not Much Of An Update

If they hold their sharpness, then I think they're going to be a worthwhile investment.

It is that mate.
I'm actually loving the challenge of how down to the wire this mod is. Seems to be going well so far. :)

Looking lovely mush :) n00b question alert; How would you know if the card has been used for mining?
Honestly, without being told outright you can't know, but if someone is dumping several high end graphics cards less than 4 months after they bought them, I don't see anything else they could have been doing with them!

A lot of people are saying that mining is actually better wear on the cards than gaming. It works out better for the cards to be run at a constant temperature rather than have to deal with the varied amounts of heating up and cooling down you get from short (in comparison) bursts of gaming. Time will tell if this theory holds true!

Haha, when you have tools lying around that are so old they're using imperial measurements, it doesn't take much deliberation to decide to make them useful again. :p

Not much of an update, other than to say my case is off being powder coated, and the last little thing I did to it before I sent it was to cover a couple of holes on the back plate and epoxy on a little structural support for a corner that I'd weakened a little more than I was comfortable with.

Should have the parts back next week, and then can hopefully make some decent progress for a change!

Hmm...

Still waiting on getting my case back from powder coating, but I was toying around with a couple of things and ended up pondering if this would work...

Compressing it as hard as I can with my hands to simulate it being mounted doesn't seem to budge it, so I'm seriously considering doing it.

One thing's for sure it'd be worth it for the super clean look when lit up...

I am very intrigued by that LED idea... the modder side of me says "Do it, see what happens!" :D
I just hope it doesn't get too hot and melt the plastic hold down plate or something! Hopefully it being on the waterblock might unintentionally help!
