Project: OC3D Smokin Server!

As some of you may know, one of our current servers affectionately known as OC2 has been giving me a lot of grief recently. The server hosts the main website, forums, mail system and a couple of game servers. But due to various issues its been up and down like a yoyo.

Therefore it's getting replaced...and in a true OC3D style :D

New Server Specs:

- Antec 3U Rackmount case

- Intel X58 Motherboard

- Intel i7 965 XE CPU

- 12GB Ram (brand not confirmed)

- Adaptec RAID Card

- 3x 1TB Samsung F1 Hard Disk

- D-Link 4-Port 200Mbit (800MBit) Network Card

Chances are I will probably be running Windows Hyper-V Server on it so that we can split the servers power up over a number of virtual servers.

Pictures to come soon :p

Very very nice :D I'm wondering about the virtual servers though.. Doesn't virtualization make the server do things less effectively? Wouldn't it be better to just use a single server and save yourself the hassle?

Looking forward to the pics :)

Not really. The Microsoft Hyper-V Server is an extremely chopped down version of Windows 2008 that has no functionality at all other than controling Virtual servers. It apparently allows systems running on it to operate at 96% the speed they would if they was installed directly on the server.

Running a virtual server allows:

- Snapshots of the entire OS to be taken as backup without interrupting the applications running on it.

- Full system restores in a matter of seconds from a snapshot.

- Choosing best OS for the job: e.g, OC3D's web server can run on Linux, but the game servers (or whatever) on Windows.

- Environment duplication. Create a copy of a server and run it in isolation to test if updates or software installs you have planned might f*k things up.

- Better application management. If you have an application that hogs memory or suffers from memory leaks, you can put it on its own little server limited to 1GB ram for example

- Security...Remember that FTP server idea ;)

At 96% efficiency, you've got some good points there :) Especially on the security part and I guess you will not be really short on ram anyway.

Where the hell did you get the money for that beast??!

I sold one of my platinum teeth mate :p

Nah its a combination of sponsorship, begging, left over review items and dipping into mine & oc3d's small pockets.

Has anybody ever had a CCFL go pop on them while their PC was on? Did it cause the PC to switch off?

I've got some spare cathodes here...would be a laugh to bling this server out :p

Nah as long as the inverter is a decent one it'll be ok :) If the inverter goes pop it might do though

Some of them go quite nastily don't they? Sure i've heard stories of them catching fire?

Yep, like this:

:(

That was off CMG, basically the guy said it doesn't matter about the cathodes so long as the inverter is up to the job. Could always mount the inverter in a box or outside the case as a precaution though.

I'd say black with OC3D orange on the handles and other visible small parts :p

*runs*

*chases*

"Come back here and tell me how foolish it would be to powdercoat a server"

Well nearly no one would ever see it. It would however seriously stand out from the rest of the servers in its rack :p

At least I assume it's going to end up in a server rack.

some sensor device that causes a sound whenever somebody walks past it.

maybe frag shouting "oc3d rules!!!"
