Project: Edge

Oh man, it's complete and it looks the dogs danglies. :D

I thought I did a clean job of the PC-8 but this is smooooooth.

Gonna start uploading pictures but for now heres a shot of the temps on medium fan speed. 27*C on a 4850, shwing!

Pretty much complete pictures! All thats left is the switch plate from Marcus and the rails from TTL and Edge is done. :D

My ingenious fill/drain system. Fully utilizing the awesomeness of the Multioption reservoir:

PA120.3 With the horrible Lian Li's removed and spangly new Yates attached:

And thats a build log ladies and gentlemen. :D

Minor updates to this ongoing build (theres still plenty to come yet).

Heres the top switch plate courtesy of Marcus. Had a couple of minor niggles arise that will be sorted next time I have the case in pieces. First off the reason why theres only 2 bolts in the top, turns out the to get bolts through the front I need to drill about 3-4mm of the actual chassis away, obviously a little more to account for the actual nut... it's not a big deal, 5 minutes with a dremel, but it wasn't something I could do at the time with the HDD's and fan controller in the bays at the same time.

The other minor kinks are the fact I need to order 4 more red bolts to match the rad grill and the led on the reset (right hand side) switch isn't blinking away anymore... hopefully it's just a wiring issue and not a dead switch (not like I ever use the reset switch anyways):

And my new (*cough*b-grade*cough*) Rampage Formula in all it's glory. Had more bumps in the road here aswell. When I opened it up one of the thin aluminum heatsink fins and the clear CMOS button were loose in the anti-static bag, there doesn't seem to be any damage to either side of the board or any of the slots, but i'm still anxious to see whether or not she powers on.

The other snag here was replacing the stock Asus TIM with some lovely MX2. Getting the NB/SB cooler off was easy as pie, removed the screws on the NB sink and unplugged the pushpins on the SB and it came off without any force. Why? Well it turned out the TIM that was in between had almost entirely solidified, there was literally only a tiny moist patch on the X48 IHS and almost nothing on the SB.... it was almost as if someone had just put a small dollop of generic tim on over the old hardened stuff. :S

Anyways, took a good hour with some ArctiClean, a Stanly blade and some fine grit sandpaper to get the bases clean and smooth again (it was practically a bodge lapping job, so I truly hope I dont have to send the board off, they might wonder why the black paint has been sanded away from the southbridge sink :S).

How it looked when it came off.... As you can see, barely nothing acting as a interface *shakes head*

After giving the chips a well deserved clean up.

And the menacing glow she gives off in the night:

Hehe, cheers lads. :D

The last major update for awhile (excluding when I get the skates), i'm more than happy to not mess about with it anymore now till i've sorted more important things out first (being back to work tomorrow is the first big step in that regard :D).

In the summer i'll be going crossfire with another 4850, replacing the Raptor X with a decent SSD, upgrading the waterloop with a PA120.2 and doing something with the door but until then I have a decent, stable, rather pretty gaming machine.... something i've not had for awhile because of that damn P5E3/DDR3 combo I had previously.

Anyways, picture time again!

Some shots of the heatpipe assembly and how much better contact was being made with the North and Southbridge after a little sandpaper and alot of tim cleaner and stanly action:

After clearing all the cables and removing the blocks:

And the first signs of life! I'm still waiting for the day I build a machine that doesn't boot first time... my luck cant hold out THAT long. :S

And finished and back under the desk all happy and.... red.

Again, it's only the camera that makes it look orange, in the flesh it's a lovely deep red:

Im still undecided on this one. Dont get me wrong, nice clean build n all, just, everyone is doing red and black. Seen 3 projects today with it. But then again, we are ALWAYS limited on what we can do....

I know man, i've noticed a surge in red builds aswell. I kinda had to keep the red+black theme as everything was taken from the Mountain Mods I did earlier in the year (back when there weren't as many similarly themed builds) and there was no way I could afford to get all new fans, mouse & keyboard, switches, leds, CCFL's etc...

Like you say though there is a limit to whats possible, i've done red and green this year, and blue is common as muck... not really sure what direction i'll be going in the next build. :S

How about yellow?

I had plans last year for a wasp-themed TJ-07.... Yellow coolant doesn't work well (mostly green) and decent yellow fans are impossible to find (I dont like the idea of taking apart and painting fans myself, everything i've ever painted has came out preposterously bad) . :(

Purple is something i've definately been thinking about, UV works pretty much perfect for a subtle purple glow. Gold and silver is the other effect thats been playing on my mind, dont think it's been done before either.:p

I like it, maybe as it is similar to mine (red and black ftw!) but I like what you done with the res, nice twist on it :D I think it looks ace.

The edging on your window looks a bit ragged edged though, might just be the pics resizing, apart from that nice rig

Ooh whats this? New gear you say, Mr postman?! Oh happy joy! :D

Edge is about to be rebuilt, really want to get this rig finished before I start the next build.

Some more anodised bolts courtesy of tastynuts... can finally mount the switch bay properly now.

More braid and shrink to re-do the bulgin switches and new fans when I get them (no i'm not Murder Mod'ing my PSU.... yet):

UN Designs pump bracket, EK Anti-Cyclone plate and a male-to-male fitting? We're saying "G'day mate!" to the horizontally mounted res people, going straight on da pump:

More EK goodness, a few choice pics of this absolutely beautiful little block:

Anyways, stay tuned, more to come yadda yadda yadda....
