hi all, hope you can help. bought a used intel duo processor e6850. it still had some grey paste on it. so i asked the person i bought it of, should i remove it. he said if you put it back the way it came of, it should be ok. he told me how to put it back the same way as it came of. but do you think it would be better to clean it first. if so, what is the best to clean it with, and what is the best way to go about it ? do i clean the processor and the head of the cooler. regards gboy.

Yep, better clean everything first. I have Arcticlean as I use AS5 in all of my systems, but normal benzine will do (don't know the exact word for it as I'm Dutch..).

hi sp33dfr34k, thanks for your help. maybe some one can give me the name of the stuff to clean it with. regards. gboy.

We are talking about thermal grease, right?

Just use a damp cloth and wipe over the top of the processor. I always do that.

I usually use one of those blue and white checked kitchen wipes. Works a dream.

Obviously don't use the cloth again for anything else.. ;)

You should always clean off secondhand parts before using them. I use Goo-Gone followed by Isopropyl alcohol, works a treat & a helluva lot cheaper than Arcticlean.

Once the alcohol's dry you can then apply a small amount of whatever grease you have decided to use.

Yeah deffo clean the paste off and reapply more. I didn't have paste to hand on my old Socket A setup so I tried leaving the cured paste that was already on and it booted up fine. It was ok when the pc was on and the fan going but when I turned it off the chip basically cooked itself and wouldn't turn back on...

hi all, can anyone tell me, were is the best place to obtain, goo-gone and isopropyl from. kind regards gboy.
