Problem with small form BTX case

Hi,

My computer has been driving me nuts because everytime I do anything on it the fan revs up and it gets *really* noisy.

The system is in a desktop chassis, with a P4 2.8GHz on an Intel D845GERG2 (socket 478) motherboard. The heatsink is on its side, sucking air across the motherboard, into the heatsink, and then out through the power supply. This fan on the heatsink is 60x60x10mm and sounds noisy at 2500RPM (CPU temp is only 40 degrees at this RPM).

I'm really not sure what to do. I was thinking about trying to replace the fan first, but can't find a 60mm fan with a 10mm depth. I've tried looking for a heatsink/fan combo which fits into the space, but am having trouble finding something suitable with the fan on the side.

I'm at a bit of a loss really.

Has anyone here fitted heatsinks and fans in these cramped cases and can spare some tips?

Kind Regards,

Ian./

you may get more help if you were to snap a few photographs of the area, and perhaps some measurements of the maximum dimensions for the cpu cooler.

60mm fans are generally noisy anyway, regardless of make/cfm/rpm, so you would probably get more help if you got some pictures of the current cooler in place inside the case.

Hi,

Good idea! Here are a couple of pics,

They show the heatsink straight on, and one from the side to show the air flow. I guess what i'm looking for is a heatsink like this, but with more effiecient fin design so it can house a 60x60x25mm fan rather than the super-slim 60x60x10mm I have at the moment?

The heatsink (including fan) dimensions are about 65x65x65mm

I've put in a fanmate to keep the fan speed capped at 1500RPM, and have put on Intel Active Monitor to allert me should the CPU temp go above 65 Degrees. That's giving me some breathing space, but I suspect a better heatsink/fan combo is the proper solution.

Kind Regards,

Ian./
