Power supply for gtx 980 ?

Hello i have a "https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-148-GI" card coming tomorrow and i need to upgrade my current power supply 550w xfx to power the card. I was wondering what is the best power supply to purchase for around £50-90 modular preferably thats not insanely high wattage and a decent psu. Thanks in advance :D

That XFX is a Seasonic built unit and is very good. Seasonic make some of the best power supplies in the business. It's not the brand of power supply that matters, it's the OEM and in this case, it's one of the best. 850 might be more than you need tho. 650 would work fine of a 750 if you want a little overkill.

You don't need a high wattage PSU for the 980, At load in testing a whole system with a 980 in it with an overclock runs around 350watts, For the entire system.

You could safely and comfortably stay with your current PSU but if you are dead set on getting a PSU get one with at least a gold rating so you have peace of mind.

650w Superflower Gold rated, £87.95 -

Tom even did a review of this PSU *The white version of course ^_^* and gave it not just the gold award but also the white gold award which in layman's terms means it is the dogs bollocks !

OP exactly which XFX 550W PSU do you have? Not only that, however as above you will not need to upgrade your PSU to run a single 980.

Appreciate all the feedback. i currently have this power supply however i was kind of worried incase it blew up LoL http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/p1-550s-xxb9.html.

If a 4960X clocked to 4.40GHZ, 32GB of memory, A few SSD's, CPU cooler and 1 x 980 use around 350w in the reviews why would that blow up a 550w PSU ? ^_^

As you haven't told us the rest of your system specs I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you haven't got that kind of rig and will be VERY safe with a 550w PSU as you'll still have 200w of headroom :)

These are the specs of the test system when the 980 was reviewed -

Intel Core i7-4960X @ 4.4GHz
ASUS Rampage IV Extreme
Corsair Dominator Platinum 2133
Corsair AX1500i
Corsair Neutron GTX
Corsair H100i
Windows 7 x64

And here is the wattage used at load for the entire system -

Ergo you do not need to change your PSU :)

Yeah my system is as follows
- Case: NZXT h440
- CPU: i7 4790k
- Motherboard: Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 5
- RAM: 12gb CORSAIR VENGEANCE 1600mhz i think
- Graphics:Gigabyte NVIDIA GTX 980 4GB DDR5 PCI
- Primary Drive: WD 1TB 3.5 inch Internal Hard Drive - Caviar Blue
- Power Supply: xfx 550w

- Ordering soon: Sanddisk extreme pro ssd & corsair h80i cooler

I read on overclockers it was 600watts minimum for the 980 so was a bit scared incase i blew the psu LoL. Thanks for all the help too i really appreciate it

Well Nvidia recommend a 500w so personally I'd go with the people who actually engineer the card over a store which just wants to empty your wallet ^_^

Your system with the SSD and H80i added in should run roughly the same as the wattage in the test system above so you'll still have roughly 200w of headroom :)

Frankly those reconmended PSU figures are really just there to cover those that use noname/poor quality PSUs. Some just slap a wattage label on when the unit can barely supply it.

The XFX unit you have right now is quite decent. Seasonic is one of the good ones

Thanks so much for the assistance i really appreciate it. I think i will leave the my xfx in if you guys say it will be fine :).

I have been using the corsair rm models, they are a little on the steep end when pricing is taken into account but the quality is very good. I have both the 550 and the 1000.

For a singe 980 you will not need more then the 550/650.

Good luck.

Personally I'd go with the Superflower, I have the 1200w Platinum version.

For your system though and for when you get your 2nd 980 overall wattage consumption should be around the 600w mark at the very most with everything overclocked going by previous reviews so an 850w would be a nice choice for a good amount of headroom :)
