The more I look at that Alienware case the more I think "Cheap chinese plastic".
I've always liked the general design of Alienware but as time passes they are heading more into the teen style area.
Tbf since he posted the Alienware I looked at one myself then someone in my head went "NO!" so then I looked at the laptops but meh I dunno.
My opinion is that Alienware are for the casual people who want enthusiast performance and lack the experience to build their own. I don't mock people who buy them, I just let them know that in the end its nothing but a Dell. If they can afford them, then why not.
It's a bit deeper than that but yes, for the most part it's a good way for people to buy a decent gaming rig without being put over a barrel and bum screwed.
What I mean is if you go local you get crap for a stupid price etc.
"It's nothing but a Dell". No no no no. Doesn't work like that. They have MSI boards etc they're not Dell fodder. However, they do have all of the good parts of a Dell. They're solid, heavy and the case quality is higher than even my Cosmos 2.
Then you get the next business day warranty etc. I don't get it when people put Dell in a bad light? they're the most successful PC OEM there is, many are no longer around.
Shaun. Do what feels right and don't listen to any one. That's my motto![]()

From what i used to know about Alienware over priced hardware you could build the same thing cheaper.
Actually Dell are not. Lenovo is. I can tell you in the three companies I have worked for, we have all dropped Dell due to maintenance issues and poor quality laptops. Support however is second to none and that I commend them for. I had my screen fixed same day with an engineer coming to my house.
And yes, Shaun if you want one get one, I can't see how people have a right to comment on what you spend your cash on. I will just remove you from twitter, FB, instagram yada yada
My comments in the above post were probably a little too harsh but you get my point at least ref casuals and inexperience.
Well you can't build the same thing cheaper because you don't get the case. Odd statement that from some one as astute as you dude
Can you build something similar for cheaper? yes, yes you can. Problem is, as I have displayed recently, when a part goes wrong you are then at the mercy of companies whose entire motto is "Turn and burn" - IE, they don't really want to help you out.
And those warranties vary so heavily (EVGA are supposedly great, Palit crap etc) that you are never safe.
I've built enough computers to know that it's not always plain sailing. Sometimes things go wrong and you're left with a lot of parts to diagnose etc.
It's an expensive case, that's for certain. However, if you appreciate technology then it's worth it. Let's face it, there are no other cases like this so they can theoretically charge whatever people will pay for it. Personally I thought it was actually rather reasonable.
I should have said not counting the case, I remember people talking about how over price Alienware was or is
100% all about the case dude. Well, and the name.
You just can't buy anything like it anywhere else, and that's always the case (pardon the pun).
The rest? a bonus. Mind you as I explained before they (the real one before Dell took over) used to basically take the most expensive motherboards and etc they could get their hands on and build the rigs that way. So yeah, back in the day you could easily cut corners and get a rig cheaper but it wasn't exactly the same.
Case in point.. In around 2005 I went to Alienware trying to spec up a rig that was affordable to me. I specced up a Celeron D with 512mb ram etc. The lowest I could get the price was around $900.
I then built my hack-a-mac Radiomactive for around $400, same spec. However, I used a $40 Asrock board, Alienware were using a $300 Asus board.
So whilst overall my spec was similar it wasn't the same. I also used stupid slow memory and so on.
Nowadays, and since Dell took over? there's far less in it than ever before, though admittedly feature wise this Area 51 is not a patch on the ass of the last one. I have the last one (before this, 2009) and feature wise it demolishes the new one.
Lenovo, who used to be IBM, who were sold because they were failing. K dude....
Horror stories etc? heard it all before about every company. You always hear about bad experiences, people are far quieter when something works etc.
My M11X was a lovely solid little laptop, and, when it went wrong was repaired within 48 hours. I can't say fairer than that![]()

IMO i think Alienware is over priced and almost on the same level as MAC's
Top of the line Alienware Area-51 is $4,998.99 AUD to me that's over priced.
We've had Dell rigs and laptops in my current work and they were beyond poo, We had them replaced quite a few times due to them crapping out.
We replaced them all with custom built rigs, Had zero issues after 12 months of use![]()
Oh and I just got this, Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut TIM, The best TIM on the market right next to liquid metal
