Post A Picture of Your Last Purchase

Spec is king IMO. That's what holds the value and there's nothing you can do once you have a low spec without potentially devaluating it further.

Damn. Maybe I should just leave it as it is and upgrade in a couple of years. I just really wanted nicer wheels. That's the only thing I really want now.

Wheels are fine, you can always put your stock ones in a garage or storage. And sell both sets with the car.

Car modifications however, I would advise against unless you are prepared to sell your car cheaply just to get rid of it.

Even (using just as an example) Turbo drop valves added to your engine can drop the value because some do not like that "whooosh" sound when you switch gears and dip that clutch.

You have an ideal first car. So when you decide to resell and upgrade to something better, you should market it exactly as that "an ideal first car".

Oh, I getcha. I'm not fussed about adding anything other than alloys. I had looked on eBay at body coloured or piano black door mirrors and a stock spoiler in the same finish, but the chances are I wouldn't bother with them as they're not cheap. I was looking into a K&N air filter, but I've decided against that as the results don't appear to be applicable to me and my car. I had hoped there was easy and affordable way to add a light tint to the rear windows, but I can't find anything. I wouldn't be modifying the chassis, suspension, gearbox, or anything else mechanical. So right now it looks like alloys are not a terrible addition because I can put the originals back on, right? I'd still need to drop around £300 on the alloys (if I went brand-new) plus a fee to install them on my tires.

Tinting is hard. Needs an expert, tbh. I did try it once but it was full of bubbles. I wouldn't fit a K&N tbh. If you want it to sound better and get a couple of extra horses fit a CAI, complete. Stock air boxes are junk. You should be able to get the mirrors wrapped. I personally painted mine myself (black, then lots of clear) and my door handles etc.

Performance mods on a VW UP is honestly pointless, unless you went balls to wall and is was mental. Tinting can be done quite cheap by a tinting company.

When you refer to alloys, you mean the alloy option that VW offer or aftermarket?

Yeah, I'm not fussed about performance mods for the car. It's peppy enough for me. I've seen the 75bhp UP surpass the 13.2s 0-62mph rating with experienced drivers on the autobahn. That's plenty for me. It sounds nicer than the Hyundai i20 I was looking at and didn't feel any more sluggish than that which had a 4-cylinder 1.2L 84bhp engine.

Tinting shouldn't detract from the value at all (I know it won't add any) as a lot of UPs already come with tinting.

As for alloys, I can't find stock VW UP alloys so it'll be aftermarket ones. I asked at the VW dealership how much stock alloys would be to add as an extra and he said they'd be very expensive.

Even CAIs haven't been proven to offer any noticeable benefits, at least not for someone like me who's only just started driving.

Take it from me, a CAI completely transformed my car. It used to sound lame. Added the CAI and it made it sound so beautiful that I used to deliberately drive through tunnels with all of the windows open :D Just to make it sing !

Is it generally considered a modification by insurance companies?

Hmm in that case it could be quite costly to get a full set of tyres unless you can find rims with the exact same dimensions.

I wouldn't fit anything like that to an UP, if it was really old then it wouldn't matter but it's pretty much new.

So for instance this...

...won't fit the UP?

EDIT: Oh, I think you mean the width won't fit the stock tires, is that right? So 6.5J won't fit the stock tires and I'd have to replace them as well as replace the steel wheels with the alloys?

I'll have to skip it then. Irish insurers sometimes won't even quote a modified car let alone one owned by a new driver. :p

You might have to get new tyres to fit the aftermarket wheels yeah. I don't know for sure but this site is good for that.

You are probably best off avoiding any modifications that would require you to inform the insurance company. i.e. deviations from what was commonly available on a standard car. For alloys, find some genuine VW ones from another up! as this won't have any effect on your insurance. Declaring mods to the insurance company can result in them either charging you the earth or deciding that they don't want the risk.

Also note that making the wheels heavier will have an immensely negative effect on both handling and acceleration. I did this on my car, going from my standard 15"x6.5J alloys to 17"x7J with an extra 4Kg of weight per corner. To put it mildly, it made the ride rotten, had a mildly negative effect on acceleration (with 270hp) and took 2mpg.

Looks like an up with 15" wheels has a width of 5.5J, an offset of ET41 and uses 185/55 tyres. Centre Bore you would also need for aftermarket rims which is 57.1 mm.

As promised. Beware, the pictures are huge so be careful when opening them!

Doesn't look that big right? Wrong. Here's a Blu-Ray case for comparison...

Over 450 pages!

Finally the four separate boxes the Lego bricks are held in forming a rather nice picture:

Finished yet? I picked it up before Christmas, but haven't had the time to build much. Just finished the 3rd set of bags.
