Possible i7 3770k CPU Damagage

Hi all,

Upon removing the Intel stock cooler from my CPU to install a new H100i, I noticed that it hadn't been attached properly and that only some of the cooler had made suffuciet contact with the CPU.

I immediately remembered the occasional high temperatures of 80 degrees Celcius that ASUS AI Suite would record whilst the CPU was under moderate load. And then I remembered that I ran a very intensive bitcoin miner for an hour or so which would have used the CPU cores. And then I remembered that the ASUS AI Suite would normally record temperatures around 20 degrees lower than they actually were.

So the CPU, whilst using its stock cooler, could have experienced temperatures of around 100 decrease Celcius.

My question then is whether I can thoroughly test the CPU for possible damage, and whether I should expect its performance to have degraded at all.

Many thanks,

Luke.

Your processor would have throttled itself down if it got too hot. So, dammage is unlikely, but still possible. And unless the uncovered area was in the center, then it shouldn't have caused too much of an issue. If it was on the edges then there is definitely no dammage.

Are there any typical symptoms of heat related CPU damage?

I've attached a photograph to my initial post for you to look at. It doesn't seem to have been very centrally attached.

Thats stock Intel coolers for ya right there...
Unless you are getting Bsods or lag spikes for no reason then not really.
Run a burn in or bench mark test and see how you score against an identical processor (At stock speeds) thats the easiest way to tell. If your score is crap or inconsistent you might need to ivestigate further. If scores are normal you should be good to go.

I'll do that tomorrow and let you know how it goes.

I've recently been using Prime95 and Intel Burn Test to assess the H100i's performance and at stock speeds (with Turbo Boost enabled) the core temperatures don't go above 65 degrees Celcius.

Could you recommend a good benchmarking program to use for comparison?

It should be fine.

I have a Sandybridge Xeon and my Cooshit Eco ran dry and the PC just shut down repeatedly.

As mentioned, your CPU will have a safety feature built in.

UCbench and as above mentioned Cinebench 11.5.
Just be sure you have adequate cooling if using UCbench.

yep dont trust asus ai software. apparently my motherboard was 127c the other day while my cpu was at -47c.
unless the underpants gnomes in my house had an oxy torch and ln2 on hand that night.
hmmmm

Does anybody know of a good place to compare Cinebench scores? I can only find a few threads and they're all relating to overclocked CPUs.

Thanks for that but I've already come across their database and it doesn't have a single entry for an i7 3770K CPU.

In other news, my latest Cinebench score is 8.49 points (@ 4.1 GHz) and a complete run of Intel Burn Test finished successfully. 30 minutes or so of Prime95 didn't identify any errors but I've yet to do a 12 or 24 hour run.

Hopefully this means that my CPU isn't damaged, although it does run a bit hot at roughly 87 degrees Celcius under full load.
