Don't bother with broken ps3s. They're not like Xboxes to fix and can cost quite a bit to repair as the parts are a pain to get in some cases.

I'd stick an SSD in there if I was going to bother upgrading it to be honest, or maybe an SSHD if you need much more storage.
I have a PS3 mainly because its still one of the best bluray players around. No care for the games. But Last of us does interest me.
The last of us was worth $60. Easily.
