is there a way to lower ur ping while playin a game, i finally got off my a$$ and hooked up my xbox to the internet to play some halo through xbconnect my average ping i would say is between 90-100 but sometimes it jump up to 300-400 during gameplay....soo ya

Is there someone else using the internet while you play? to get a good ping you must have full access

Probably not the best answer but you mayt need to look at changing your ISP.

Bit OT - Is there a common IP address or server that people ping to test their ping times?

im limited to ISP, only two in my area, 1 cabe and 1 dsl, and to see what my ping is im just goin by what it shows on my pc screen when i have my xbconnect running while playin halo

It's tough to get a steady playable ping over Xbconnect... I remember when it first came out and getting on a forum discussing the benefits/downfalls to it.

The biggest downfall to the whole internet play system on games that aren't made for XBL is that they aren't designed to be playable with pings over 5-10ms since you don't get anything higher on a local network. I gave up on Xbconnect about a week after it came out, no need for it anyhow I had 4 xbox's setup at the house for gnarly tournament action :)

Yes, as Dav0s says, connecting to local servers will be better for pings, and cable is usually better. However a ping of 400 is terrible, and 56k would probably be better than whatever your on :p.

ill try to stay to the closer severs to my area to help, i have dsl since i dont like cable and the ping of 400 or so is rare but i did see it a couple of times

Its possible that your adsl provider uses the BT Datastream network, which isn't as good as the IPStream network that is now more commonly used, which provider are you with?

like i said only two provider in my area so i dont have much of a choice, there called Frontier communications

I couldn't find anything on them tbh, and their website doesn't work either, but if your ok with them, thats all that matters. :)
